Hearing The Audio Being Captured?

I can see the level indicators moving and I can play back the tracks when it is done, but is there anyway I can hear what is being recorded while it is happening? I can hear the audio when I am capturing video so why not when I'm just capturing audio?

Depends on your audio card/chip and OS settings as well as how you are cpaturing (your result is typical for USB capture). Please provide both for better replies.
