Create menu/Files in an unsupported format

biggerth

Question

I am trying to burn two video prgrams to a single DVD. The video programs are already processed using DVD2One. If there were just one video program, I would use the Data Tab in Toast and burn with DVD-ROM (UDF) importing both Video_TS and Audio_TS created by DVD2One. I would like to create a menu to select each program on the DVD player. This does not seem possible using the the Data Tab/DVD-ROM (UDF). In Toast 6.0.3, I used the Video Tab and selected DVD-Video to drag multiple Video_TS and create a menu. Since updating to Toast 6.1.1, this operation results in the error message 'Four files are in an unsupported format and can not be imported'. I realise that in Toast 6.1.1 there is a new selection - DVD-Video from Video_TS, but this does not allow for creation of a menu.

Can anyone help with the following questions:

Is it possible to create a menu in Toast 6.1.1 with processed Video_TS files?

What are the 'files are in an unsupported format' that and can not be imported and are they necessary?

Should I just revert to Toast 6.0.3?

Any suggestions?

Thanks

1. Choose DVD video as the format in the Video window (I recommend using Toast 6.1.1 but the same steps work in 6.0.3).

2. Drag each of the VIDEO_TS folders created by DVD2One to the Toast Video window. You'll get the error message that some files are unsupported. That's okay because those unsupported files aren't needed. What you'll see are your videos and possibly also a couple zero-second files. Delete the zero-second ones so you just have the videos you want on the DVD.

3. Enter text that describes your videos that you want to appear in the menu.

4. Choose Save as Disc Image from the File menu. When Toast is done saving that image file you can select and mount it using the Copy window. This way you can preview it with DVD Player.

5. If you like what you see, burn the image file to DVD using the Copy window.

I'm presuming you already know these videos are sized to fit the disc you'll be burning.

Thank you for your advice. I followed your instructions. In the past (in 6.0.3) I have burned two video programs to a single DVD by dragging each of the VIDEO_TS folders created by DVD2One to the Toast Video window as you suggest. I was unsure about the 'files are in an unsupported format and can not be imported' error message in 6.1.1, but as you point out, they do not appear to be needed.

However, I still have a problem. Programs I have burned to DVD in the past by dragging each of the VIDEO_TS folders created by DVD2One to the Toast Video window have been in full TV screen format. No problem. The programs that I am currently trying to burn are in wide screen (picture does not occupy the top and bottom of the screen). When I drag and burn via the Toast Video window (in both 6.03 and 6.1.1) the screen format is lost and the image occupies the entire screen giving a Panavision effect (elongated picture). Joining the episodes in DVD2One and then burning using the the Data Tab/DVD-ROM (UDF) retains the format. Any ideas?

Thanks.

Toast 6 does get confused at times about recognizing widescreen video sources. Toast 7 has a setting to force the widescreen mode, but that doesn't help here.

There is a workaround that involves using the donation-ware application MyDVDEdit. It's a bit complicated to explain. You start by dragging the VIDEO_TS folder created by Toast to the desktop (either from the DVD or from a mounted disc image file). Select the folder and press Command+I to Get Info. Change the permissions to Read/Write (click the arrow so you see the button to apply the change to all the folder contents). Now you can select that VIDEO_TS folder with MyDVDEdit. Select a title at the top left. Click the IFO button in the middle. Change the Aspect Ratio setting to 16:9 widescreen and letterbox and pan & scan. Do the same for any other titles. Press Save. Now use Toast's DVD Video from VIDEO_TS setting to burn that VIDEO_TS folder to a DVD. The videos will appear in their widescreen format on a 16:9 TV and as either letterboxed widescreen or pan & scan on a 4:3 TV depending on the settings of the DVD player.

Thank you so much for your help. I downloaded MyDVDEdit and followed your instructions. It takes a bit of time, but it certainly solves the problem. I notice that it is only necessary (and preferable) to change the Aspect Ratio setting in MyDVDEdit for the video titles that are in wide screen, and not the menu itself, created by Toast.

Thanks again. Very much appreciated!
