Big_Dave
Download the camera's native recorded format without using compression. You should always record in an uncompressed format to avoid quality loss verses saving some space. Compression will generally squeeze out some bits of data and reconstruction back to original format is not possible in many if not all cases. Jim_Hardin
Just so you know, mpeg1 is the video equivalent of drawing with lego blocks If you use an external HD, make sure it is formatted in NTFS. Too many are still FAT and limited to 4GB files.

Thanks, Snug I've been doing some research on this very topic and, apparently, avi is the best format. For some reason, it is the easiest for conversion programs to convert say, to DVD. snug
Let me clarify-I am converting my old VHS tapes to a digital format and saving it to an external hard drive. Should I convert to AVI or MPEG 2?
Big_Dave
Convert your tapes using an uncompressed format and store the data on a hard drive. An AVI file may carry audio/visual data inside the chunks in virtually any compression scheme, including Full Frame (Uncompressed), Intel Real Time (Indeo), Cinepak, Motion JPEG, Editable MPEG, VDOWave, ClearVideo / RealVideo, QPEG, and MPEG-4 Video. Larry
Let me clarify-I am converting my old VHS tapes to a digital format and saving it to an external hard drive. Should I convert to AVI or MPEG 2? Using the VHS to DVD, capture using the DV-AVI option if you have the space for it. It is the least compressed option and the easiest to edit & retain the best quality with.
