Getting to know Roxio...and have an easy question

dixie1

Question

Hi folks,

I am a new user of Roxio VHS to DVD and it has been very interesting, to say the least. I am doing pretty good with it and have transferred one full BETA tape, (circa 1980), to DVD so far. No without a LOT of problems to solve, but it is working. Several things I want to comment on and also questions to ask.

Comments:

I have found that when I lose a 'signal', it is because of the tape. (I have dl'd/installed all the upgrades). Fortunately, Roxio STOPS the CAPTURE process when that happens. This threw me until I realized what had happened. Now I simply rewind the tape to the place where it is static/ragged/etc, move past that part and then start the CAPTURE mode again. It works like a dream....but it took me a long time to figure this out.

I started off using the double layer DVD's and ruined about three of them. I have not tried another one yet and have been using regular DVD-R's but I am now going to try the DVD-R-DL's again since I now know what was happening when I lost the signal.

I have found that on occasion, the DVD will not play in my "E" drive, DVD/CD player, but will play in the "D" drive, Burner. ?? The first time I played it, it was 'jerky'. Then I removed it and tried again and it was fine. Then tried it in the "E" drive with no luck. But.....it will play in my CD/DVD player in the TV room. ?? Anyhow, it works and that is what counts.

Questions:

1. Can the program be stopped, closed and then come back to it later, picking up the tape where I left off? Will Roxio have the Capture stored and will it pick it up also and resume the CAPTURE/BURNING??

I noticed that the program screens have the "MINIMIZE" dash at the right top of the screen. I have tried it and Roxio can be 'minimized' while CAPTURING and I can do some other things on my computer. Is this OK to do or am I risking the entire project?

One thing I might share with all. I bought a program called Camera Mate a couple of years ago and just recently decided to 'finally' give it a try. It was terrible!! Very, very difficult to use and it simply would not work for me. So be aware of it if you see it on sale somewhere.

:)

I have a LOT of tapes to record/burn...Three old BETA and about twelve VHS so this program is very important to me. Many thanks for any help/comments you can share with me. :)

I wish I still had a Beta machine to capture some of my Betas

Have you installed SP2, this is supposed to solve some of the "No Signal" problems

Instead of capturing direct to DVD, I would first capture to hard drive, this might result in fewer coaster.

Also, doing other things while capturing is not recommended. Your CPU is busy trying to capture and convert the video and doing other things during this time will create hiccups and may ruin your capture and burn.

If you are buirning direct to DVD you cannot stop the program and carry on lated. Once you stop the DVD is finalized. That is why capturing to hard drive first is a better option.

Hi Myguggi...

Many thanks for your reply to my post. Yes, I have installed SP2 and the upgrades available for Roxio VHS to DVD. I have just finished burning a DVD-R-DL and it worked fine. Of course, I had to keep coming back to my computer to see if it had lost the signal and stopped capturing. This happened about three times. But...no sweat....I have it figured out now. When my old BETA tapes have some *mess* on them or static or whatever happened during the taping, it stops the process. All I have to do is to rewind the player until I see the 'garbage' and then move forward a bit to get past it all and then start the CAPTURE again. It is working fine.

Also thanks for your suggestion about capturing to my HD. I had not thought of that. Good idea. Also...thanks for the heads up on stopping the process and re-starting. I guess I sorta figured that would happen. Well...no problem..I'll just plan to do it while I am here and have the time set aside for it.

And....thanks for the comments on minimizing Roxio and doing other things. Good advice and I appreciate it.

Finally... I am glad I have the BETA tapes too. They are from the late 70's and early 80's. My children and some of my first grandkids. It is going to be great to have these on DVD. Same with VHS but they are later tapings.

This started out to be a *monster* project but is getting better every time I use it and learn more about it.

Again, many thanks for taking the time to help me out. :)
