Want MPEG-2 files on my desktop

yeeman

Question

I don't think I have a problem transfering my AVCHD files from my camcorder into Roxio Creator 2009 & burning to a DVD. What seems to happen when I IMPORT the files, I get the MPEG-2 files copied on my desktop, but they don't display any video. I'm trying to get the actual files on my desktop, not the "image".

I said I'm importing from an HD camcorder. Opening the Video Capture box, importing the selected files, & burning them to a DVD as MPEG-2.....which is the default format.

I would like to have a copy of all the MPEG-2 files to store somewhere else......not an iso image !!!

I can't seem to figure out how to save these MPEG-2 files. A copy of the files are copied to my desktop, but they don't play correctly......no video !!! What can I do???

You could start by being more detailed in the steps you are taking. You're description of what you are doing is still very general in nature.

Such as, how are you:

Opening the "Video Capture box"?

What options are you using for capturing [importing]?

How [app, settings] are you burning to DVD?

What is making a copy of files on your desktop?

What type [file extension] of files are on your desktop?

Since there are multiple ways to capture video & burn DVD's, without some details, we have no idea what you are actually doing and what parts of the suite you are using.

1) Panasonic HDC-HS100 is connected to Sony FW290 laptop ( Vista/32 bit ) with USB cable.

2) 20sec. video clip is on camera HDD

3) As soon as camera connects to PC, Auto Play Box opens

4) I select " Transfer pictures using Media Import "

5) Roxio Media Import opens up

6) I click on Video tab at TOP.

7) I click on HDD in drop box

8) All video clips in camera are displayed on left screen as "MTS" files

9) I hi-lite desired clip

10) I click on IMPORT NOW

11) Clip shows up on right screen under "Recently Imported "( I believe it's now an MPEG-2 file )

12) I click on imported clip & get video...NO audio

13) I freak out & curse

14) I go to my desktop where a copy of the clip is sent & is displayed as MPEG/HD video( maybe this copy of clip is still in HD ? )

15) I click on the clip & get NO video & NO audio

16) I freak out & curse

* I'm NOT trying to burn anything YET.....but,after I do burn to DVD...I still want an MPEG-2 copy of each clip to store somewhere else.

I'm hoping that Creator 2009 can accomplish ALL I need without using the Panasonic included software or some video converter software.

Have you tried just copying the files off the memory card or the internal hard drive to your computer's hard drive?

Have you tried Firewire? I'm not sure that it is still true but in the past Roxio saw the USB connected camera as a web cam so you could get some video but no audio. EDIT: I could not find if that unit has a Firewire port; I don't think it does.

Panasonic's application does allow input via USB so you may have to use that.

NO firewire port in camcorder.......just in laptop.

I'm still trying to understand how to convert the M2TS files from the camcorder to AVI,MPEG-2, or whatever using "Any Video Converter" software.

I'm still hoping that the Roxio program can do it easier,faster, with more consistent reliability ??? My head is spinning !!

Copy the m2ts file from your camcorder to your hard drive and then add the file in Videowave. Output as mpeg2.

It would help if you were to specify what software program from Creator 2009 suite you are using.

Roxio VideoWave ( Edit Video-Advanced )

Am I suppose to drag & drop the M2TS file somewhere in this ?

When I do, it automatically converts it to something else.

Where is the option to set the Output format ?

( or was it already converted to MPEG-2 ? )

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
UPDATE: I finally found out where to change all the output settings in Video Wave & created an AVI file...but, NO AUDIO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was so close !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
BTW....no problem converting AVI files in Video Wave......just these M2TS files aren'r working out yet.
Select Add from the task panel, navigate to the folder containing the m2ts file, select the file and click Open.
I don't know what you mean by "it automatically converts it to something else"
Just as I open up the M2TS file, a message opens & says that the file has to be converted in order to work with....or something like that. I have no choice, so I believe the file is automatically converted to an MPEG-2 ?
Unfortunately, the final result is an MPEG type file with NO audio !!! I've hit a wall now.
BTW.....I tried that "Sync it" feature in Roxio Creator 2009 to convert video files & got nowhere !!!
Is VideoWave the program I should be using to convert stuff ? I didn't see anything else in Roxio.
This free program "Any Video Converter" is OK, but the video portion seems to run slower that the audio file....so it's outta sync !!!
We have hit this before with some of the low end HD camcorders… They do not save the Audio as true Stereo so it doesn’t convert correctly.
In the case of QuickTime files we found a simple fix was to rename the extension from .MOV to .mp4.
I don’t have any m2ts files to try that trick with, but you do! Change the filename extension to mp4 and load it into VideoWave and check the Audio.
Yes VW will convert to a Proxy file but you can do the Export As – but for now we have to get over the missing Audio!!!
So give the rename a try and let us know.
Hmmmmmm. Is it possible that my countless hours of stress & frustration all week have been rewarded ? Countless hours on the phone with Panasonic & Roxio with no results. Struggling with various video conversion software with mixed results. Experimenting with dozens of video settings that I have no knowledge of or understanding. The story:
Your last suggestion of changing the extension on my m2ts files basically rendered the files useless when I tried to drag them into VideoWave. Fortunately, all the files I'm dealing with are just insignificant test files...short 10 to 30 second video clips with my HD camera, which I don't feel is a low end model...Panasonic HDC-HS100. Anyway, I transfered the dozen or so files from my camera using the Panasonic included software, ( a copy of the original files are always in the HDD of the camera )"drilled" thru the folders until I found the m2ts files,dragged them all to my desktop, changed all the m2ts extensions to AVI, get a message each time saying that the file may be useless after I make the change, confirm the change,........NOW THEY ALL PLAY BACK PERFECTLY !!!!!Is it possible that I don't need converter software at all now ????? Am I just lucky in this case ??? Should it really be that simple ???? Am I dreaming ???
Do you think this AVI extension is a good default solution for burning to discs,storing on external HDD, & just a general format that will play on most DVD players ?
I'm OK with the quality since I don't have any interests in purchasing a unit that plays back in HD.
So, since I changed the extension to AVI, is it still in HD or standard def. now ? Let's see what happens when I try to burn the files to disc.
UPDATE: So far, it seems that changing the extension just allows me to easily view the video clips on my PC......Roxio doesn't seem to recognize the files now.
UPDATE: I've tried several times with Roxio's MY DVD and VIDEOWAVE....my "new" files just cause the programs to stop responding !!!
I burnt the files to disc with Sonic Record Now......files do NOT play in DVD player or PC.
I burnt files to disc with Windows & the video clips DO play back in my Sony laptop ( Vista/32 bit )......OK....better than nothing.
Right now, it seems that the file extension just allows me to play back the HD files on my PC, but I basically can't do anything else with them ....yet.
It's better than nothing......I learned a new trick.
UPDATE:
OK, Roxio VideoWave is able to create an AVI file from my m2ts files with BOTH video AND audio now...............GO FIGURE !!!!!!!!!!!!!
What am I doing different now that I didn't do 25 times yesterday................NOTHING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanx for everyone's help !!!!!!!! I hope this still works 5 mins. from now !!!!! If not, I'll be back !!!!
This is FRICKIN" NUTS !!!!!!!!!!!!!! But, changing the extension was worth knowing !!
UPDATE: Used Roxio VideoWave to convert my m2ts file ( 60.3 mb ) to:
mpeg-2 ( 35.5 mb )
DV-AVI ( 107 mb !! )
Divix ( 5.92 mb )
AVC ( 5.48 mb ).....this is some kind of mpeg-4
WHEW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Import the files from where? Exactly what are you trying to do and how are you doing it? If you import from the DVD all you get is one mpeg2 file on your desktop
