DVD Copy: From Two Layer to One Layer. Is it possible?

omarrodz

Question

I wanted to backup a program I own, which is on a DVD and it is 4.9GB. All my blank DVDs are standard 4.7GB.

I am using an Intel Mac 2008 and Roxio Toast 9 Titanium. When I try doing a simple backup/disc copy, it says there is not enough space on the blank DVD (I have dvd compression checked, assuming it will make it fit, but it does not)

Is it possible to copy a 4.9GB DVD to a 4.7GB DVD ? If so, how could I achieve that? Thank you !

It is a data DVD

Toast does make .dmg files (that is the one it created)

I think I know where we're on different paths. You are trying to back this up using the Copy window rather than the Data window. Toast cannot compress Data discs in the Copy window. If you choose Mac Only as the format in the Data window, click New Disc and add your content from the source disc, you can choose an option to have Toast compress the content similar to using the Finder to make a zip archive.

Alternatively you can forget about compression and use Toast's Disc Spanning feature to burn the content across two discs. Toast includes a restore application on each of the discs that will assemble the split content on your hard drive.

When making a disc image in the Data window the extension is .toast.

If this is a video DVD then Toast has a "Fit-to-DVD" option that does additional compression to fit the single layer disc. Just use the Disc Copy function in the Copy window and choose Save as Disc Image. You'll be asked if you want this to fit a dual-layer or single-layer disc. Burn the resulting disc image using the Image File setting in the Copy window.

If this is a Data disc then you'll need to check the Compress Contents option in the Data window and choose Save as Disc Image. The resulting disc image should be small enough to burn to a single-layer disc when choosing the Image File setting in the Copy window.

I just tried that but the dmg file is still a little bit bigger than the blank dvd. How could I fix that?

Toast doesn't make a .dmg file. It makes a .toast file. Is this a data or a video DVD? Tell me more because I'm confused by your description.
