Capture Now not working

I have windows vista basic, I have checked the drivers for roxio and all is up to date. SP2 is also loaded. In plug and burn I can see the video and hear the video but the 'capture now' button is greyed out. Thought I'd just try capture video, and avoid plug and burn. Again I get both sound and vision, but it says there is no signal. It is connected via an USB2 port using svideo and audio inputs. have read the pinned items and it is still not working.I am at a loss, any ideas.

USB port where? How long is the USB connection? Do you have the capture drop down menu set for S-Video?

a USB port on the laptop. I have 3 usb ports and all are 'enhanced'. the cable is about 2 feet long and yes it is set to s-video. As I said it is showing a screen with pictures, albeit they are black and white, and getting sound. It's just the 'capture now' button is not highlighted.
