Music DVD help!

Arringfray

Question

hi there,

I've been trying to make a music DVD for my wife with all of our kids music on it for a few days now. I can add the files and record it easy enough but i can't for the life of me get it to play right in the dvd player. The music and menu seems to work ok but the video is black and white and just keeps scrolling fast from top to bottom on the TV so you can't read anything. This wouldn't be that big of a problem but the point of making this DVD was to compile all 43 cds onto one disk instead of my wife trying to sort through all those disks all the time and if you can't read the screen you can't see what your selecting.

Anyway i just have a normal dvd player and a normal TV; none of this HD stuff. I have it all connected by VGA cables. I've tried messing around with the video encoding a little bit but honnestly I don't really understand what it all means. I've also tried playing around with my DVD video setup (aspect ratios and stuff like that) but that didn't make any difference. I would GREATLY appeciate any help...PLEASE!!!!!

Thank you;

Geoff (AKA a desperate man!)

Thanks for the reply tsantee,

yes the dvd itself seems to work ok. When I put it in my macbook or powermac it works exactly as it should. Likewise when it's in my DVD player I can press select and get the music playing I just can't see whats playing as the video is all messed up.

I have 3 different blank dvd media I have tried (BenQ, Maxell and memorex) and it had the same result with all of them. Also all the these brands of disks work in the DVD player as I have used them before for home videos and such.

as for making the copy I haven't tried that yet, but will and will post the result.

thanks for the help ;)

Your description suggests to me that your DVD player has problems with how Toast authors a music DVD. The video portion of a music DVD is a still frame. It is basically a DVD slide show that has music playing during the time each slide is presented. The fact there is no actual video but just still frames may be a problem for your player. If you don't mind wasting another DVD you might try creating a DVD slide show by dragging some photos into the Video window with DVD video selected as the format. Check if that works.

I don't think my idea of copying to another disc will make any difference. However, you might try a DVD-RW or DVD+RW disc.

I don't recall anyone reporting this issue previously.

You mention you tried three different brands of discs. Were the all DVD-R or all DVD+R? Some DVD players may be fussy about which kind of burned discs are playable without problems. That's also why I suggested trying a rewritable disc because those may be easier for the player to read. Of course it may not make any difference.

I think the very first thing you should have done was to try out your Music DVD on friends' DVD players. Especially those who have their players connected

to their TVs with line-level video and audio cables. Also, does your LDTV (low def TV) have such line-level inputs? If so, I'd u s e them. Going into a TV

using coaxial cable gives you the lowest possible video & audio quality. I recently have had a total failure trying to create a Music DVD from high res (24/96)

audio--using Toast 9. Roxio Support has been of ZERO help in trying to resolve this problem. They mainly said that Toast 9 d o e s support copying 24/96

video to a Music DVD. I had to go back to Toast 8 for success. But while the 24/96 Music DVD would play with two programs on my Mac G5, and on my

~2003 Denon player, I get nearly inaudible audio on my main player, an LG BH200 player (which does HD-DVD, Blu-ray, etc.).

well I seem to have fixed it, although I have no real idea how. I thought I would try encoding and writting the disk in toast 8 and 7 to see if that made a difference; it didn't. So I got rid of those and reinstalled toast 9. So reasons unknown to me, it now seems to work. So I guess something in the previous install was messing up. Either way though it now works and my wife is cheering!

thank you to everyone to helped out with this matter, I really appreciate it!

Ya I was thinking it may be an issue with my DVD player as well. I tried making the copy and, as you suspected, it didn't make a difference. I will try the slideshow idea when I get a chance and see if that avails to anything.

Although I have made slide shows and put them onto DVD's with IDVD a number of times. Usually they are a mix of videos and photos and those DVD's seem to work without any trouble in the player. I will still try making one in toast and see what happens. I will also try and find another DVD player I can test the disk on to see if it's just mine or something.

As for the re write-able disks, I will try this if I can find some RW disks. There are no stores near me that sell them or any other blank DVD's for that matter. i will keep my eyes out though.

This is an unusual problem so I don't have a solution off the top of my head.

I'm presuming that each of the CDs is its own title on the music DVD so your menu should have 43 titles. When you insert the music DVD in your Mac and view it with DVD Player does the menu appear the way it is supposed to?

What brand and kind of DVD media did you use? For example, did you use a DVD+R disc or a DVD-R disc? What you are describing could be a compatibility issue between the brand or type of disc and the DVD player itself.

One thing to try is to use the Toast Copy window to make a duplicate copy of the music DVD. Insert the existing DVD and choose Save as Disc Image. Then eject the source DVD and choose the disc image using the Image File setting in the Copy window. Mount the disc image and view it in DVD Player (you may need to press the space bar when in DVD Player to view the menu). If the disc image looks right burn another DVD. However, this time – after inserting a blank disc – choose the slowest burn speed available.

Let me know what you discover with any of this.

I just tried making a slideshow DVD and got the same problem. I don't know if it really proves anything or not though as the video and general set-up are pretty much exactly same as the audio DVD. I will see though if I can find another DVD player to test both disks in and see what happens.
