Blu-ray HD format burned to standard DVD-R media won't play

Question

Has anyone been able to get the feature in Toast 10 working that allows you to burn HD content to regular DVD-R media and have the disc play back in a Blu-ray player?

According to the Toast documentation you can "Create a Blu-ray (BDMV) video disc that can hold up to 2 hours of high definition video on Blu-ray media or approximately 20 minutes of high definition video on standard DVD media for playback on many Blu-ray players."

I have tried this repeatedly, but none of the discs I burn this way will play in my Blu-ray player.

I have one of the newest Samsung players (BD-P1600) so I don't think that's an issue.

Roxio tech support has not been helpful. They keep sending me stock replies about upgrading my firmware and making sure I am not trying to burn the disc a too high of a speed. I have don't all of that but it still won't work.

Just curious if anyone has been successful with this.

Yes, I have. I have a Sony BDP-S1 player. A video of the Spring Nationals Drag Race in Houston taken with a Canon HV 30 came out as if you were looking out a clean window. :)

I looked at the specs for that player and found that it should play an AVCHD disc. Suggestion if you have a Best Buy or Fry's or other big box store, take one of the DVD and try to play it on another player that clearly states that it will play an AVCHD disc.

What kind of error message are you getting? Are you using a quality brand of DVD? Memorex and store brands have been known to have problems. Get Verbatim or if these are important to you, go on-line and buy some Taiyo Uniden.

Sorry if this is too basic a question for you but did you activate the Blu-Ray plug in? How are you making the AVCHD disc? Where did you get the video that you are trying to put on the disc?

Thanks for the reply.

My player is a Samsung BD-P1600. It says it will play AVCHD discs as well. I have tried Verbatim and Imation DVDs. I have activated the Blu-Ray plugin and am choosing the "Blu-Ray video" option tab in Toast when making the disc. The disc seems to burn fine, but when I put it in the player it just gives me a message that "The disc could not be read."

My source media came originally from HDCAM. It was edited on an Avid Symphony in 1080i and exported as a 1920x1080 quicktime. That quicktime was then dropped into Toast.

I will try your suggestion of taking the disc into Best Buy and see if it will play on any other player.

Is it possible that Toast will only work with AVCHD media? I have had no indication of this from the people at Roxio.
