EMC 7 no longer renders movies

j.miller@tst-corp.com

Question

When I try to render a project into a movie, I get this error message:

Error occurred while rendering your movie. Please try selecting another format.

I have tried most of the other formats and still get the same error message. I have successfully rendered movies before, so I don't understand what is different.

Any ideas?

What type of files are you using? Do they play ok in Windows Media Player?

The raw video capture files are .avi and they have rendered into a movie before, and they run in Windows Media Player. I also have voice over audio files that are .wav format, that I recorded using the EMC sound recorder. They have rendered successfully before also.

For titles in between the video clips I am using .png slides and these have not been rendered before. It would be no problem to turn them into .jpg if necessary. Could the .png files be the problem?

I have tried to render into most but not all of the file formats.

That's what I'm wondering. I've never tried .png files before but I can't see why that wouldn't work. Try it and let me know.

AVI files should render fine but sometimes it's the transitions or effects that cause problems for me and I don't know why but it is seldom and not a general problem.

I tried a version of my project file with no slides in it at all -- just video -- and it would not render.

This program is seriously hosed.

Actually, it sounds like something else has hosed your computer. Look at your first post. You said that it worked before. That, most of the time, means something has changed on your computer.

Try doing a Repair of the software through Add/Remove Programs. Select Change, not Uninstall.

Let's try a bit of troubleshooting.

How are you trying to render the video? Have you tried a File\ Output video to.....Video File\ DVD Authoring\ Best?

If that doesn't work, try outputting for a DV camcorder which will make a DV AVI file.

What are the source of these files?

Have you defragmented your hard drive lately?

Unfortunately, error messages often don't indicate the true source of the problem.

Tried it. Same error message. I am going to try Gramps' suggestion now.

I will try that now and let you know what happens.

When it stopped working, I completely removed and reinstalled EMC 7. I have also applied the update patch for this version before removing and reinstalling as well as after.

I am running Windows 2000 by the way. Now I am thinking aobut upgrading to XP and trying Windows Movie Maker instead.

I forgot to mention that I did defrag last weekend.

Have you tried to make a short test movie using another video?

You need to find out if it's just this one production you're having trouble with or if it's every production.

Good point. I will go back to the raw video and put together something smaller and try it.
