Video flicker when capturing

nizerific

Question

I too am experiencing video/audio flicker only when video capture is "on". My system, though older meets all the minimum requirements. I have a desktop running XP2 w/Intel P4 at 1.6GHz, 1G ram, Creative SB Live 5.1 PCI card, NVidia GForce2-MX400 w/64mb video card with updated drivers for DirectX 9c compatibility. I had the USB extender cable installed but removed it and plugged the video capture unit directly into my USB 2.0 port. A/V cables are only a meter in length. When not capturing the pic/sound are fine. As soon as I hit capture the video and sound starts stuttering which does get transfered to the DVD. I have installed service pack 2 for this product but to no avail. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. I see by the postings that a lot of people are having this problem.

Some have posted about this but the thread was locked because it was getting out of hand and nothing was being served by a collection of me too vents…

There are many variables here and to be blunt most users do not possess the stamina required to troubleshoot a problem.

First problem, Define Flickering??? Many see dropped frames and think it is flickering. Some may be seeing MacroVision and looking for a way around it.

The fact that the preview is OK until one starts to capture sounds like someone saying ’my car runs fine until I put it in gear and try to drive it’

I installed on an old PC of 550 Mhz. I just wanted some screen caps of it and not intending to actually use it on that one. I get the same results, smooth preview until I hit capture. Then it falls apart big time!

On a minimal PC you may have to fall back to some of the old tricks… Defrag just before you capture. Use the Local HDD, no externals. Turn off EVERYTHING else! Capture at HQ (DV AVI). This puts the least stress on your PC during capture.

Another thing that might be interesting is watching the Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del – Task Manager – Performance)

With Capture (Media Import) running what does CPU Usage look like?

What does it do when you start Capture Now?

On my old 550 it runs at 100% while Import is doing nothing. When I click Capture Now it stays at 100% but it just isn’t enough PC to do the job.

The minimum requirements are a joke - I have a feeling your system is just not upt to the job.

Are you shutting dow all running apps, disconnecting from the internet, disabling antivirus and not using the computer while capturing? To what format are you capturing? Are you doing plug&burn?

Yes to all except the antivirus disable. I will try that. If that doesn't work, I will be building a new computer this summer and will try it again with better hardware. Thanks.
