DVD Replication

forummaker

Question

Question for the experts here.

I'm just about finished with my DVD project and I have a few questions about creating the master disk.

Real quick:

1. I will be having the DVD's replicated not duplicated. 1000 copies.

2. I will have CSS copy protection added. They will add this.

Now the questions:

- How do I create a DVD that a glass master will be created from? I don't have to create a DLT.. -what a relief.

The company I'm dealing with gave me these instructions (see below) to create the files for them to make the glass master from.

I'm new at this whole thing... but pretty good at following directions... but I just don't understand this. I haven't had any problems creating the DVD using Creator Ultimate 09, and it looks very professional (if I do say so myself).... this program is truly top notch. I told them which program I use but they are not familiar with roxio creator, and gave me directions on how they do it with the program they use for other customers.

Here's the directions that I have to sort out...:

In DVD Studio Pro, when we "build" or create the disc, we choose the Hard Drive as our output device, instead of the burner. We then set the format of the disc to DDP 2.10. This will create a folder in the location we choose called "Layer 0". If it's a dual layer disc it will also create another folder called "Layer 1".

We then use Roxio Toast, using the DVD-Video option, and drop the folder in to be burned. This will create a disc named "Layer 0" with all the data on the root of the disc. You do NOT want to create a new disc and then place the folder onto the disc. In other words: New Disc --> Layer 0 --> Data Files.

It should look like this: Layer 0 --> Data Files

Any help with this would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Creator 2009 won’t do that…

They are citing a program, DVD Studio Pro, that is one part of a $1,300 Suite… (Final Cut Studio)

They are pulling your leg about needing to do it that way. Yes they do to create each Layer for pressing.

But you should be able to send them a burned disc and they can use their Suite to load it and do what is needed.

I was a little off with my procedures above. The snag was with the "Folder Set". I was burning the "Folder Set" when the error message came up.

Using the VCC method it still would not recognize the image.iso file and allow me to burn it.

But.. good news anyhow. I met with the company today and the DVD worked without any problems.

Now the question is... "To CSS" or "Not to CSS" that is the question here.

From everything I've read.. to add CSS... you must use a DLT.

But there is one company that says they can add CSS from a DVD-R, and create a glass master for replication.

Comments or suggestions on this?

Thanks.

Thanks for such a fast reply!

I'm meeting with someone tomorrow to go over the details of creating the master.

Here's what I have so far:

- I created the project. ie menus; intro; transitions; buttons.... all that stuff.

- Burned the project as an image.iso on the hard drive.

- Burned the image.iso to a DVD-R. - used: close the session option - (I thought using this option would make this DVD playable in 99% of all players. Not the case.)

- At this point the DVD won't play in any computer. But plays in the DVD player no problem. It seems the computer treats the DVD as a Data Disk and not a playable DVD.

How do I burn the DVD so that it will play in any compatible dvd player.

- I tried DVD-R and DVD+R - same issue.

--- I also tried burning right from the program to DVD. Same issue

Why would I burn to hard drive and create image.iso you ask?

Because the project will not adjust the "Free: -21.0MB Time Remaining: -00:00:23" and allow me to click "Burn" to DVD.

So, when I burn to hard drive as .iso and then burn to DVD.... problem solved.... and it seems the quality is better.

Another thing.... How the heck do I add CSS? - Everyone keeps saying don't waste time on this.... it's my time to waste... just tell me how to do it... please. All the other forums that I've searched in about CSS have zero usable advice on adding it to a DVD.

Thanks again for any help.

Like this to burn the iso to hard drive...

- Open my saved project (Roxio MyDVD)

- Click the "Burn" icon

- Under "Image File"... click "Save disc image file"... "Target Media" would be -R DL

- Specify where the iso will be saved to... ie. C:\users\me\desktop\image.iso

- Click "Burn"

Like this to burn the iso to DVD...

- Open Roxio Program

- From the "Home" menu screen.... Click "Burn Disk Image"

- Locate my image.iso

- Before burning click "Options"

- From the "Options" menu... "Data - Copy" - check the bubble "I want to close the DVD"

----- "Burn Options" - check the bubble "Safest"

- Click "Ok".. Then click "Go" ... and it burns.

hmmmm..... not really any other options for burning and saving.

What do you think?

Thanks.... and talk about help... special help from member number 49! Thanks!

Yes, several other ways. ;) Try using Video Copy & Convert to burn the ISO.

From the Home App, click Video-Movies on the left

Under Edit and Transfer, click on Copy and Convert DVD-video

In that app, click DVD Video Copy Tab

for source, select the ISO

for destination, your DVd burner

Click Copy

This should create a video DVd that will play.

For some reason when I locate the source iso file to burn using your method, when I click on the file, it doesn't seem to recognize it as an iso file. hmm.....

The right panel where the file would load into is blank and reads "Browse to find content for your project".

Thanks again.

I think you are going about this wrong or at least not what I would do… depends???

I you want to deliver a ‘copy ready’ DVD to be duplicated, you can do that but with limitations…

The CSS is one and the other is that you are trying to fit more on a DVD than it will hold so you end up with degraded quality because Roxio uses a Fixed Bit Rate for encoding.

The software this company has includes VBR so it can make it fit without any noticeable deterioration.

You are probably saving a few bucks by not letting the pros do your interface (menu, chapters, etc.).

As Gary pointed out VCC will yield a usable disc. – the Home app program would have if you had burned a Folder set. It would have recognized the VIDEO_TS folder and known what to do. But it would also cut of anything that didn't fit the disc whereas VCC will not!

Burned disc compatibility used to be around 80% compatibility although I think it is a little higher today.

Burned DL discs enjoy less compatibility in the wild but as your discs will be Pressed, you should enjoy 99.9% when the project is done.

Perhaps your ISO is corrupt. You may have to burn the ISO again.

Thanks for your great reply's!

Well I just got back from meeting with the company that will be replicating my DVD's. And wouldn't ya know it... the DVD I brought to show them wouldn't play in their DVD player. It played in my DVD player no problem. I think it played in mine because my DVD player plays videoCD's. And they will only play in my computer if I burn it on a DVDRW- disc... but not on a DVD+R or DVD-R.

I know it's a problem on my end.. so here's what I'm doing right now.

- I've adjusted the length of my DVD to fit on the disk.

- I'm burning the DVD to "Folder Set" and saving it to a folder called "Layer 0" on the desktop.

- I'll then burn a image.iso file and save to the same folder on the desktop.

- I'll then try to burn the image.iso file using the VCC method as instructed. I'll burn on a DVD-R.

Notes- I've closed all other programs that are running on the computer, including anti-virus.

Am I on the right track with this? I'll post back when I've done the following steps.

Thanks....

DONE. I think it's working now.

Couple changes.

- I did burn the image.iso file to hard drive.

- I did burn the "folder set" to the hard drive.

- Then I ran into a snag. When I tried to burn the Folder File using the VCC method. The program halted at about 25% and an error message indicating there was a problem with the files. (sorry. can't remember the error message.)

- So then I tried another method. Here's the link: http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=4632

- Just followed the directions and whamo... it works on my computer. Works in my DVD player.

Now I just hope it works tomorrow when I meet with them again.

I'll let ya know.

I'll sleep better tonight.
