miniDV camcorder and Roxio easy VHS to DVD

wonder1961

Question

Hi,

I installed Roxio 2009 software in my computer, Windows Vista. I then connect the miniDV camcorder (canon optura 50) to the computer and transfer the video image. The computer doesn't seem to recognize the camcorder, and the "capture video" import option is also greyed out. I have just bought the Roxio easy VHS to DVD to interface the camcorder with the PC. Would this work? I need to know before I open the box. Please help.

Thanks,

Wonder1961

Hi, Steve,

I checked the Device Manager tab and noted "IEEE 1394 Bus host controller" with subfolder "VIA OHCI compliant IEEE 1394 host controller".

I also clicked on the Imaging Devices and see "Canon DV camcorder". <phew>

As suggested, I clicked on the Roxio Creator 2009 icon and then "Capture Video". I was able to transfer a portion of a video clip...hurrah, hooray, and...hurray.

Here comes another dilemma. I cannot transfer that portion of video clip to the blank DVD. Please help.

Hi, Jim, Steve,

Thanks to you all for your help.

Hi, Steve,

Thank you for the editing tips. I can't wait to get my hand on it, just to practice... My mother-in-law's 80th birthday is coming up, and I am assigned to handle the video part :) . I have been working on transferring all of my daughter's tapes and burn them on DVD. It has been working fine for me thus far, without any editing part. The worst thing is I did most of the talking during taping (I have a terrible voice, but at least my daughter could recognize it was daddy's voice). Is there a way I can delete some and filter some to make it sound better?

Thanks for the help,

Ngoc Truong

Video Wave does have a rudimentary sound editor, just click to show the native sound and then double click on the native track. That sound editor will open. You will have to play with it.

You cannot delete the native track but you can mute or lower the volume of all or parts. Look at my video about adding music to parts of a video for some instruction.

If you have the time and the audio is really bad, you can extract the audio (right click on it in Media Manager), clean it up and then add it back to the video on any audio track other than the native track. You would then mute the native track. If you have the Ultimate version, the use Sound Soap to clean it up; if not use Sound Editor. If Sound Editor doesn't do it then TRY GoldWave. It has a lenient full function trial. If that doesn't do it ... Perhaps some appropriate music in some sections would be the way to go.

Hi, Steve,

It sounds so...complicate, but doable :) . I really like a part about "muting or lower the volume" of all or parts :) . I will update you on any progress in the making of family treasures.

Thank you so much for your help.

Hi, Jim, Steve,

I bought the FireWire 1394 cable, but the desktop Dell Inspiron 530 that I bought for my 4 years old daughter 6 months ago have this slot, but no plug-in. It seems like there is no FireWire 1394 port on my computer. Arrghhh...What do I need to do in this case? Do I need a video card for my computer? or a Firewire card?

Thanks in advance,

Ngoc

What do you mean by "the desktop Dell Inspiron 530 .... have this slot, but no plug-in"? If there is no Firewire port on the computer you can buy a Firewire card and put it in an empty card slot.

Don't open the box ! :o It will conflict with Creator 2009.

Capture via firewire if that is not how you are connected. There should be a port for that -- DV= IEEE 1394 - 4 pin). You cannot use the USB port; that will do only the still images.

Is this true for JVC too.

Depends on the JVC model. Some hard drive models only have USB. In that case, you can transfer the video via USB and you don't really need Roxio to do that. Just use Windows Explorer. However, JVC does not follow industry standards for 16:9. If you shoot in 16:9 with the JVC, you will need other software to correct the file. Go back to the beginning of this forum (Audio/Video Capture) and check out the pinned post at the top for JVC 16:9 files.

Thanks Myguggi,

Yes, my computer doesn't have a firewire port. I checked the Dell website and found Firewire card as you suggested. I am going to order one.

Thanks,

Ngoc

Hi, All,

I finally received a 3Port Firewire PCI card from Dell, installed the PCI card and ULEAD VideoStudio 9 SE DVD (that came with the card), connected the Canon camcorder to the PC, open the ULEAD VideoStudio Movie Wizard, and try to transfer the video by clicking on the "capture video" and here is the error message " Capture Module initialization failed. Failed to build a preview graph". Anyway, the computer seems to recognize the camcoder since I can control the playback feature from the computer.

Please help...

Thanks in advance,

Does Windows see that Firewire card is connected (My Computer- Hardware)?

Was there a driver setup disc for that Firewire pci card separate from the Ulead? Have you tried using the Roxio Media Import application. Does it see the camera? Do you get a preview?

Fail to build a preview graph has also been seen in Creator/EMC. Are you running XP with Media Manager Receiver Service? if so, read this?

Update the drivers for your video card/chip and set the chip's performance to best performance (via Windows) and not best appearance.

As Steve points out, the Optura 50 does have a Firewire which will result in a better capture and your V2D Software will conflict with Creator 2009.

If you still have a need for a A/D Converter, Roxio sells the device as a stand alone called Roxio Video Capture USB which is a little cheaper since it does not include the software.

Hi, Steve, Jim,

Thank you so much for saving me the trouble form opening the box. I check the manual and it calls for the following items to transfer video recording to a computer:

Canon USB Video Driver. Note: I already installed the Digital Video Solution Disk that came with the package. Is this software a driver? or is this a A/D converter (Roxio Video Capture USB) as suggested by Jim?

Window Movie Makers 2 (version 2.0.3312.0). Note: I have no idea what this is.

Commercially available DV cable: IEEE 1394(DV) terminal or IE1394 capture board.

As Steve suggested, I will buy this IEEE-1394 cable.

Thanks in advance for your helps,

Respecfully,

I believe that you will only be able to transfer STILL Pictures with USB.

For DV video you will have to go with Firewire.

You have the camera, the manual and the included software. You can test and tell us!

The A/D device, Roxio or any other, is not needed or desired unless you have a need to input from an Analog source.

Use Video Wave to do the editing and MyDVD to burn DVDs.

Here are user developed videos that should make the learning process easier.

mine.
