MyDVD video won't play on computer

jroc

Question

I created a video/slideshow in Videowave, then burned it with MyDVD for my daughter to play on her computer in conjunction with her business. The video ran fine in both my disc drives on my computer and also on my wife's laptop. My daughter can't play it on either of her two computers. Whazzup with that? For what it's worth, mine and my wife's computers are running Vista and my daughter's running XP--though that shouldn't make a difference. Any suggestions?

Arghh! Neither of her computers has a DVD drive. Grr. I can make her a VCD I guess but that can only use still photos, right? I use a lot of motion stuff in my productions. Grr again. So I guess this is the end of this discussion and thanks, both of you, for your replies.

DVD drives are inexpensive now. She could get one for less than $30. Her computers will problably accept IDE burners, only.

Not really giving us anything to work with… Error messages go a long way in resolving issues.

Have her download and try the VLC Player, it is very forgiving. - Here

I'll call her and get back to you but I think she said the computer was acting as if there was no disc in the drive. I'll try to be more precise after I talk to her. Thanks.

Nope. You can also use video clips. Same video flow strategy as creating a DVD project, but instead of selecting a DVD project, you select a VCD project in MyDVD. Then you can bring in the same Videowave production into it.

Ah, I didn't realize that. I'll burn a sample immediately and see how it goes. Does the quality suffer between VCD and DVD videos?

You could get an external DVD drive, but what I am talking about is an internal drive. If her computers are 5 years old, they can't use the newer SATA DVD burners, but will be able to use an IDE burner.

Does she have an open 5.25" drive bay? If not, she can dump the CD burner and put the DVD burner in that bay.

Oops, screwed up my Reply. Anyway, thanks for the excellent comparison chart. I burned a VCD and a SVCD last night and of course the SVCD is higher quality. I will send her that with the warning that she tell viewers the quality will be much better on a DVD disc. For those interested enough by viewing the SVCD samples I'll give her several sample DVDs to hand out so they can view them at home and return them. Not a very professional work-around but it should git 'er done.

Thanks again, guys, for your help.

You may not be out of the woods yet!

It is very rare to find a PC that will know what to do with a VCD/SVCD disc!

She will probably have to point it to the file in the MPEGAV folder (mpg or dat) for it to play.

Not too many DVD Players will play VCD’s anymore as they are slowly going the down the dinosaur path…

Thanks for the graphic. She should receive the SVCD today or tomorrow. I'll let you know what happens

Sorry, forgot to update. She got the SVCD disc and couldn't play it. Can't remember now, several days later, what it was that showed when she tried to open it but I told her to forget it until I could someday get down there. When that happens, if I can't come up with an answer I'll post again (or maybe just say "forget it, for good").

Jim [jroc],

A horrible thought - do your daughter's drives have DVD players in them, or only CD ones?

Ouch, good point. I'll ask her that, too, if and when I get ahold of her. She's so busy she sometimes simply shuts her phone off so she can get some work done. I'll be back.
