Issue with captured video

Quality Control

Question

Version 1.0.2 is an important software update to Easy VHS to DVD for Mac.

Download link

I recently purchased the VHS to DVD for Mac. I also updated to version 1.0.2. The quality of the conversion is very dark. At least 25% darker than original VHS tape. To compare, I recorded the VHS directly to a DVD recorder and the quality was fine. Then I copied the DVD to my computer using Handbrake and the quality was great. When I run the Roxio version side by side with my DVD approach, there is no comparison. I am not sure if there is something wrong with the tech. in Roxio unit, it's software, etc.? But I am ready to return it and get my money back.

Any Suggestions?

The Ultimate double post!

When was the last time your monitor was calibrated. That way, you'll know the correct brightness.

I compared a capture from the Easy VHS to DVD for Mac to one done with the analog-to-digital passthrough of my Canon DV camcorder. The black levels were much deeper and contrast a little greater with the Roxio device. The DV version looked washed out by comparison. While the Roxio device looked better in its blacks, its midtones are too dark in my opinion. For example, the faces of some African-Americans lost a lot of detail and brightness. I used QuickTime Pro's video adjustments on both the DV capture and on a QuickTime export from the Roxio unit and was not able to make either look ideal. However, for the video I was testing the Roxio one looked better to me overall.

I'd like Roxio to adjust some of the calibration or provide user controls for midtone brightness/lightness.
