Unable to install on Win XP Pro SP3

Question

First off, thanks Jim for posting those "clean install" instructions. Attempting to follow them:

(1) Disabled all startup programs, but got an "Access Denied" error message even though I'm an Administrator on this machine. After reboot, all services are disabled.

(2) No "Roxio Creator 2009" in the list of programs to add/remove -- I've never had a successful installation of this, and I haven't used Roxio (or Sonic) software on this machine in the past.

(3) Installed Windows Installer Cleanup. None of the "installed products" it lists start with Roxio, Sonic, EMC, SmartSound or DirectXInstallService.

(4) Set folder options to show hidden.

(5) Going through list of folders to delete:

No C:\Program Files\Roxio

No C:\Program Files\Roxio Creator 2009 (may include "Special Edition" or "Ultimate")

No C:\Program Files\Sonic

No C:\Program Files\Common Files\Roxio Shared

No C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sonic Shared

No C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Roxio

No C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sonic

No C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Roxio

No C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Sonic

No C:\Documents and Settings\user name\Local Settings\Application Data\RoxioCentralFX

(6) Cleared browser cookies and browsing history

(7) No Roxio folder under HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software

No Roxio folder under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software

After rebooting, my install fails the same way it did prior to these steps: I enter my serial number, and after about ten seconds of "Gathering required information..." over the progress bar, I get a dialog box that says, "Roxio Creator 2009 Special Edition setup was interrupted. Your system has not been modified. To install this program at a later time, please run the installation again. Click the Finish button to exit the Wizard."

My machine is a Dell E1705 laptop, with a 1.7 GHz T2250 CPU and 2G of RAM.

Prior to this, following instructions from phone support, I also downloaded and installed the latest version of DirectX9 from Microsoft. I've also tried removing C:\Windows\System32\dsetup.dll but that file is not on my machine and so can't be deleted.

Any suggestions?

And since another user suggested it in another thread: I booted the machine in Safe Mode, and attempted to install. I got a different error: "Setup encountered an error during installtion. Error Code: 0641".

Do you have any other Roxio/Sonic software installed? If you do, try uninstalling it from the computer. Follow the clean install instructions and remember to download and install the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. That will remove any Roxio/Sonic items from the computer.

Thanks for the suggestion, Code Red. As I tried to describe in my initial post to this thread, I've run the Installer Cleanup and Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs as well as manually editing the registry and removing directories. For the most part, there was nothing to do, since I've never used Sonic or Roxio software in the past (or, indeed, the present -- I haven't managed to install this yet in dozens of tries). Sometimes there's some SmartSound component that the installer managed to insert but failed to roll back, but usually there's nothing.

Dave, I think I did do the full clean before I tried the Safe Mode install, but since I'm not certain I'll try it again.

Thanks for the suggestion, Jean. The phone support guy on Friday asked about my .Net; when I told him I had 3.5 (vanilla) installed, he seemed satisfied with that and didn't ask me to remove it. It sounded like some later revision of 3.5 might have caused problems, though.

Removing .Net 3.5 and attempting to install Creator 2009 resulted in a minute or two of Creator "Installing Microsoft .Net 3.5" before it failed with the same error message I described above.

Removing both .NET 3.5 and .NET 3.0 and attempting to install Creator 2009 resulted in a minute or two of Creator "Installing Microsoft .Net 3.5", then (immediately) a "Success" dialog box, but no Roxio folder installed in my C:\Program Files directory.

My trouble ticket was updated again with a suggestion to call them so they could guide me through a wipe and reinstall of my OS, and the ticket was subsequently closed (even though I'm still having trouble).

I'm actually curious at this point if it's even possible to install this software on my computer under any circumstances, but I hesitate to go through the hassle of completely wiping my hard drive if the effort is doomed to fail. To the people on this forum who have assisted many people: are you aware of any people for whom following all the clean install instructions was not sufficient, but a FORMAT C: and reinstall was sufficient?

Another update on my trouble ticket. They suggest clearing out temp files, then doing the Clean Install steps again, and disabling networking during the install.

It failed in exactly the same way.

I tried removing .Net 3.5 so that the installer could handle that part; it gave a "Success" dialog box, but there was only one file in C:\Program Files\Roxio Creator 2009 Special Edition (Roxio Central 4\RxCentral.rxc), and nothing added to the start menu. So not a success by the normal definition of the term.

Click on the Start button and then click on RUN. You may have to navigate to Accessories to find the RUN command window. Type in: dxdiag and let the DirectX diagnostic run to completion. Then click on each tab and see if any problems were encountered.

If you are installing from a CD, have to tried to load the CD to a folder on your hard drive and then try the install?

Sorry, Dave, I neglected to answer your question: yes, I have tried installing from hard drive instead of DVD. It hasn't made a difference.

Another update to my trouble ticket. They didn't have any new ideas, but they did suggest combining all the old ones. Create a new administrator account, and copy the contents of the DVD to the hard drive, and do a clean install.

The install claimed to work (I got the "Success") dialog box, but there is no Roxio Creator 2009 folder under my C:\Program Files.

They read a list of suggestions and may not be aware that it isn’t working or you have stumbled onto something not listed yet! - That's not true. Don't know where that information came from. Anyways, try this if you haven't all ready:

Do you have any other Roxio/Sonic software installed? If you do, try uninstalling it from the computer. Follow the clean install instructions and remember to download and install the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. That will remove any Roxio/Sonic items from the computer.

Thanks for the advice, Jim. Manually installing .Net 3.5 (no SP) and going through all the cleaning steps again results in my attempted installation of Creator 2009 failing with the same error message ("Roxio Creator 2009 Special Edition setup was interrupted. Your system has not been modified. To install this program at a later time, please run the installation again. Click the Finish button to exit the Wizard."), the only difference being that I don't have to wait for the Creator installer to install .Net.

My trouble ticket was updated with a repetition of the advice to run Windows Install Cleanup (and again, there were no Sonic, Roxio or DirectXInstall items to remove on my system) and to disable my virus protection. The ticket update also had a suggestion of creating a new user with Administrator privileges and doing the install as that user. This failed in the same way (except that I was asked during the install whether I wanted to install Google toolbar, which I am not asked when I install as my regular user).

??? I always see that Google annoyance and live in fear I will forget to uncheck it sometime

But beyond that we seem to see conflicting info about this… Personally I always use a telephone at this point – works better than anything else :D

Thanks again, Jim. I did call phone support on Friday, but all they did was run me through the steps in the "Clean Install" KB document. I'll see if I can find time to try them again today.

Be sure you do make a point that you keep being advised to do the same thing over and over and it results in the same non-install.

They read a list of suggestions and may not be aware that it isn’t working or you have stumbled onto something not listed yet!
