Canon 5D MkII and Creator 2009

bungles

Question

Hi everyone,

First post here so be gentle :)

I'm a stills photographer who has become fascinated by the potential to use my Canon 5D MkII for video production. As a pc user I'm finding it difficult to locate a good solution for the importing and editing of 5D MkII video files.

I'm a complete newbie to video but I have established the following about the 5D video files that might help the experts:

- captures video (HD or SD) at a true 30.00 fps and recorded as .mov files

- the 5D clips are at 40 mbits/s MPEG4 and uses a H.264 codec

All this is mumbo jumbo to me at the moment, especially after becoming quite proficient with photo manipulation software, I feel like I'm back at school!

The 5D MkII files can be comfortably handled by Final Cut Express/Pro for those using a Mac but life appears much harder for us pc users.

The video quality generated by this camera are astonishing in the right hands and the ability to use all my camera lenses is heaven.

Can anyone advise me how and whether Creator 2009 can be used to successfully import and edit 5D MkII files. From what I can gather there seems to be problems ensuring synchronisation between the video and sound as other devices record and playback at 29.97 fps. There appears to be a huge demand building for a good solution.

If you haven't seen any 5D MkII generated video take a look at these examples:

Many thanks!

Wow! Three digital gurus trying to help out a newbie, I'm impressed!

Apologies for not getting back to you all sooner. I've been playing around with Creator 2009 Ultimate and a few 5D MkII files before admitting defeat. OK, first off, the MkII files play perfectly in Quicktime though this may not be too surprising. When I add them into Roxio's VideoWave for editing, the image is broken up into horizontal bands. Sound plays fine.

I've also tried to use a couple of converters to change the .mov files to something else that the Roxio software recognises. I've explored Cineform's NeoScene that is claimed to convert the Canon 5D files to an AVI file that can be played OK in Adobe Premiere and Sony Vegas - no luck with Creator. Same proble with the horizontal bands.

I've also tried numerous conversions using the AVS4YOU software but once again no luck.

As requested, I have uploaded an 11 sec (30.4 MB) file straight off the 5D MkII using the public uploader on the UpForDown site. The file is called MVI_1388 under the name "bungles" and with the comments "Canon 5D MkII video_6sec". If any of you guys has the time, I would be most grateful if you could take a look at the file and see if you can get it to play properly in Creator 2009.

BTW, I'd really like to get this to work as I'm really impressed with the editor. It's fantastic that I can easily add my iTunes songs to the video as well as sound tracks downloaded from the freesound website. Just type something in the search box and it will find some amazing sound clips:

Freesound

Thanks for any help!

With all this thrashing around, did you ever ask Canon why their files are useless???

I have never been able to download from that site and they don’t answer my tickets… But I looked anyway and you don’t have anything???

And you did answer my questions about your desired output???

I don’t see how anyone can answer without playing with the files a little.

You also must specify what your output target will be. Roxio does Blu-ray, AVCHD & DVD Movies.

Each is of a specific format, there is no such thing as a “video file” that meets all needs.

Several of us have taken HD Video and output to the lesser DVD Movie format without a glitch.

Give us a sample at http://www.upfordown.com/ or any other site that we download and we will give it test drive.

Try it and see; if you buy Creator 2009 from their on-line store; you have 30 days to return it if you are not satisfied.

I have not used that camera but perhaps some comments might be in order. Creator 2009 will work with those HD mov files. You can probably just copy the MOV files to your computer from the memory card/stick. Use Video Wave to do your editing. In the example, you are using music for your show ( You don't look old enough to know that music). That would be no problem. The audio from some cameras sometimes won't work right but there are several work arounds. My experience is with a SD Olympus camera that also recorded mov files with an audio that would work. As I said, there are work arounds. (Better consider the Ultimate version.)

When you go to burn, you can upload to an on-line sharing site or you can burn an AVCHD disc. This is a HD disc burned to a SD DVD with a SD burner but must be played on a Blu-ray player. If you don't have one, you can still burn a SD DVD. In my opinion, they look very good.

Don't worry about the 30 fps vs 29.97. That should not be an issue. If you want to do a slide show with the program, you may be disappointed since it is normally SD.

Let's see -- what did I miss?

Hi Jim,

Well I can tell you that it's definitely there and I see it has been downloaded twice already!

Try this link:

UpForDown_Canon 5D MkII file

The Canon files are far from useless but suffer from compatibility issues with some software, apparently including Creator 2009. They can be used quite comfortably in many other video editors such as Final Cut, and Sony Vegas/Adobe Premiere etc. after conversion to AVI using Cineform's Neoscene. Take a look at some of the video generated using the 5D MkII such as those I mention in my original post. Without being an expert, I'm guessing that the files need converting to something compatible with Creator before they can be properly viewed.

My intended outputs are web, DVD and Blu-ray.

Thanks for your interest.

I believe the answer to that question is No. Another user posted the same question several months ago. I think he had an issue with the audio not importing correctly. However, we never got a sample file to try out either. So if you could upload a sample file to www.upfordown.com or YouSentIt, we would be more than happy to test it out for you.

You think I faked that screen cap

Link worked but the site message is still the same – No Files!

No, the file is useless if it is in a format that the major players cannot use… You may not like the term but it is the truth.

I have no problem with my Canon still or movie files (MOV & AVI) or my Sony HD (MOV). But if I had a Canon file or any other that didn’t load without me having to pass through other software, I would be on the phone faster than you can say speed dial

I will take a look when I have some time.

No Jim, I am sure you see what you see but I just logged in using another account and downloaded the file no problem.

I've just downloaded Adobe Premiere Elements and dropped the 5D MkII files onto the timeline and they run perfectly without any changes to the original files. My guess is that quite a few of the other video editing vendors have sorted this issue out already.

I coming at your world from the still photo side so I bow to your greater wisdom. My guess is that Canon had some good reasons to provide the video output they have from the 5D MkII but I'm sure that the still and video worlds are heading for an almighty collision in the very near future. The sooner Roxio move on this, the sooner they will have the opportunity to capture an army of stills converts :)

Here's another file:

Screen capture II_5D MkII_VideoWave

I've obviously used a different clip so that you can see the banding.

Right it's midnight here so I'm off to bed now. Up early tomorrow 5:30am

The screen capture shows teh bands, but not much else. What app are you using? Videowave? The sample video is 16:9, but your screen cap is 4:3.

According to Quicktime Moive Inspector, the file is 1920x1080 30FPS (I assume progressive) 16bit integer (Little Endian), stereo 41Khz. Loads fine for me, too.

It happens with ALL my clips but the banding would be difficult to see on the one I posted as it's just water.

You did think the trouble clip would be the one you want to have us look at???

How about posting that one!

I think it is time to move past the file as the problem and look into your PC…

List out the specs like you see listed in our signatures with emphasis on the Video Card.

Answer Gary’s inquiry and supply any details that would allow us to replicate the banding.

Thanks for the feedback Gary.

I have posted my equipment and software details in my signature line below. Yes, I am using the latest version of Videowave and Quicktime. I have posted a link to a screen grab below showing the effect I get when I drop the file into VideoWave. Sound plays perfectly. As I've mentioned to Jim previously, I can drop these files into Quicktime or Adobe Premiere (trial version) and they play without a hitch so I'm really puzzled what's going on here as I see a few of you dg's have said that the file plays fine.

Hi sknis,

Yes, they are .mov files and yes, I am using the latest version of the software.

Thanks

I wonder if those are mov type files.

bungles, do you have the latest version of Apple Quicktime on your computer?

Hi Jim, thanks for sticking with me

Given that I can successfully view these files in other editing programs without any problem (QuickTime and Adobe Premiere) I do not believe I have any problems with the set up of my pc. The fact that all you dg's can view the files no problem suggests that there is something about the import process to me when I'm using VideoWave. All my drivers, software etc. are up to date.

I've added details of my system to my signature line below.

Cheers!

SUCCESS!

Given that you guys all managed to successful view my video, I set about looking at all the settings. It turns out that there is a setting under Tools>Options that needs to be correctly set. I changed the Render Using Software tickbox to Hardware and it works perfectly. Please note that I did not change this setting after installation.

See screen capture below for the options screen and video without banding.

Thanks for sticking with me guys - you gave me the guidance to sort this out.

Cheers!
