Question

Hey folks,

One last shot here before I splurge on phone support.

I have part of this question up as a addendum to a post that was extremely helpful

on a how to question but since it is in the wrong section I thought I'd put it here and mention all I've tried.

I get what appears to be a common error but nothing I've found seems to do the trick.

It's that pesky 80004003 error that says 'failed to start image writing application' 80004003 while aborting"

(it's burned one time - the first time I tried it and that's it.

I'm not trying to burn too much - can't even get a 5 minute clip to burn.

I've made sure my driver is current.

The computer (gateway) isn't too old so the burner should be up to snuff. It is an Atapi DVD w DH16w.

The device manager says the burner is working properly.

There's plenty of space on my hard drive.

I've tried 3 different kinds of discs. (although I've noticed Verbatim is recommended here and that is one I haven't tried yet.

DMA is enabled.

I've tried slower burn speeds.

I switched from 'hardware to software in options.

The video driver is NVIDIA Geforce 6150se nforce 430 (I don't know if that is compliant with directx 9 as the help section says my driver needs to to be. Could that be the problem?

One thing I've noticed I'm not sure about and hopefully someone can tell me is in the Burn To Disc menu - where it says 'target media'. It's set at: -R DL. DL is dual layer right? I don't know why it would be set to that, I don't even think my burner has that capability but it's grayed out so I can't change it to regular -r or +r to experiment and see if that might be set wrong. I've looked through every options screen trying to find a way to change it - but can't find it. No place in the help sections is that 'target media' option even mentioned.

Help...please...I'll buy you a virtual beer or if you don't drink a virtual sarsaparilla.

peace,

Kevin

Thanks. So you're thinking firmware? Of course the problem would be something I know zip about.

The only thing is the info on the 'how do I find firmware revision' page doesn't show how to find it

in Vista. My other problem is that apparently 'ATAPI' isn't the make of my burner I take it? When

I tried to find the site I ended up having to find a definition instead. An interface. Hum...That means

I have no idea what Gateway supplied me with. Maybe I can find out on their site via my serial #...

So updating the driver nor computer updates in general don't update firmware? I've had computers

a good 10 years and I've never manually updated firmware. Guess there's a first time for everything!

thanks again,

Kevin

To identify your drive, right click my computer and click properties. The system properties window opens, click the Hardware tab and then click device manager. The Device Manager Window opens, from the top, view, make sure a dot is next to view devices by type. Click the + next to DVD/CD-Rom Drives, post what it reads?

For the firmware version, from the above, right click the drive/s and click properties, click the details tab. It should show, example mine IDECDROMBENQ_DVD_DD_DW1640_______________BSRB_____. The # / letters where my BSRB is, is what we need you to post with the drive model/name.

Gateway might use OEM only drives. Firmware for those are only available from the Gateway site.

just wanted to thank everyone for their help. Looks like it was firmware. All is good now.

Glad I knew a computer wiz at work though because finding firmware and loading it for

my particular burner was a bear. Ended up bringing it in to work to let him get the job done!

So for anyone having this particular error (80004003) save yourself a ton of headaches and

update your firmware. Take it from me, NOTHING else works!

Also for anyone who has my burner: ATAPI DVDW DH16W1P provided with a Gateway - it is not

an ATAPI nor a Philips it's a LITE-ON. Without that knowledge you'll never find the firmware you need!

peace all,

Kevin

I've been to the device manager before. Didn't see the word 'firmware' so didn't know that was the right place.

the drive is ATAPI DVDW DH16W1P ATA device

I think I got the firmware listing right. There's a drop down menu of around 30 in the details tab but under 'hardware id'

it says: IDE\ATAPI_DVD_W__DH16W1P____________________LG12____ (my drop down doesn't have 'device instance id')

At Gateway, keying in my SN I also got: Philips 16X Double-Layer Multi-Format DVD Writer Driver

Apparently I do have DL burn capabilities. Didn't know that. Maybe I'll try getting some -R DL discs since it seems to be stuck on that and give it a whirl.

Thanks man,

Kevin
