Saving Selected Scenes to Hard DRive

scgjkg

Question

I have a JVC Digtial Video Camera Model #GR-DVL-720U. I just installed Media Creator 7 and this is my first time using it. I downloaded my mini-DV using Roxio Capture Smartscan. I then went to the right and highlighted all the scences I wanted to save to my hard drive. Unfortunately, each time it keeps saying scene 27 not detected or scene 47 not detected. No matter what scene I try to capture I keep getting this error message to either scan the tape again or that specific scene. Please tell me if I am missing something. It also turns my camcorder back on when I'm trying to save the selected scences and rewinds and fastforwards like it is trying to find the first of my selected scenes. Thanks for your help in advance

When recording to mini tape on a camcorder, every time you start recording it makes a time code on the tape as Walt pointed out. However, when you shut the recorder off and then later start another recording, it sets another beginning time code. so every time you record the time track or code always starts at "00" again. so now after many recordings, there are several times that are identical. And later when the camcorder looks for a particular scene at a ceratin time, it gets confused and cannot find it.

The only way I know of to keep this from happening is to "Strip" the entire tape before you do any recording. "Striping" the tape is to cover the lens and start recording. let the recording go till it has completely used up the entire tape. The recording will place a time code or track that is one continues time from beginning to end. Now when you record and turn off the camera and then record again, there is alway a completely different time code for anything that is on the tape and the camera will no longer get confused.

This takes time to record a blank tape I know, but you will not ever be disapointed. So "STRIP" your tapes. Most all professionals will tell you that too.

It sounds like there are gaps on your camcorder tape and the SmartScan has problems with those since it scans the tape and determines scenes based on the time codes. If there are gaps on the tape with no time stamps the program gets lost. That is one of the reasons I never use SmartScan but often use the manual capture. That that continuous tape motion is also not that good for your camcorder.

For capturing scenes from the tape to individual files I use a small free program called WinDV. Here is a link to its home page:

It has no problems with gaps on the tape and you can start and stop scanning at any point on the tape.
