Media Capture stopped working

canonhv30

Question

Hi All,

I am trying to transfer from my video camera to Roxio Creator 09 in Vista. I am using a Pixela 1394 to usb 2.0 transfer cable. When I open the Roxio media import, I find USB Video Device and my bult in webcam. I click on the USB video device and my camera starts playing the tape and pauses (this is normal -its queuing up the tape). As soon as I click on the USB Video Device , Windows vista comes up with "Roxio Media Capture Has Stopped Working" and Roxio freezes  . The only option is to close the program.

I tried capturing with the webcam and it works properly. I tried capturing from the camera using Windows Media Maker and it works properly. I installed the SP4 patch and didn't make a difference. Any suggestions?

I am using an HP laptop with 2.0Ghz Dual core 64bit system with Vista home premium, 4g ram and 240g HD space.

Thank you.

-Jeff

1394 to USB cable? Do you have firewire on your computer? If not, you would be better off buying a firewire card and using a firewire cable to capture from the Canon HV30. I have the HV20 and have no issues capturing from it using firewire.

No, neither my laptop nor my desktop have a firewire card. When I use the Movie Maker that came with Vista, I don't have a problem with this cable. It is only with Creative 2009 that doesn't work. This cable has a firewire hardware built into it- its a little box in the middle of the cable.

Does it take 2009 a second or two to think before your camera start up? Does the camera start as 2009 brings up the capture gui?

Thank you,

Jeff

When capturing with Movie Maker, are you absolutely sure you are transferring at Hidef thru that cable? Personally, I've never heard of one. How does it show it in Windows Device manager? Does Windows recognize the camcorder? You can tell by opening Device Manager - see right hand side under Imaging Device.

You're best bet would be to buy a firewire card and cable. These are available for the desktop and the laptop.

Your not reading your manual…

Look at page 77 – you must use a Firewire cable to transfer Video!!!

Look at page 78 – USB is only for Still Images

There is no “converter” in the wire the lump is a choke coil to reduce line noise.

Nice camcorder!

Thank you Walt.

It is not included with the camcorder but is a separate package. Probably has to be used with that package or as the OP found he can use it with WMM.

Hi guys,

Yes, that is the cable I have. Last night I switched Roxio onto my older computer with XP on it. This morning I tried the Pixela cable with Roxio and it worked!

The pixela cable came with a note regarding using it with Vista. I followed the instructions but I think it still has an issue with Vista. I wonder if it will work with new OS 7.

Some interesting information: The 1394 is rated to 400mb/s and the USB 2.0 is rated at 480 mb/s. I was concerned that there would be a latency issue but I have not seen any issue. Pixela is sold out of the cable.

I am really glad I bought the Canon HV camera. Is there a difference between the 20 and 30? I found out that Costco was selling the 20 after I bought the 30.

Thanks for the help.

-Jeff

That cable came out in 2004/2005 and does not really seem to have caught on. Most posts related to it are from the period 2005-2006. There is also a comment on the Pixela website that it and/or the software does not work with Vista.

I think that there are some significant differences in how they operate but they both give excellent performance with this software (via firewire capture). I have a Blu-ray player so the AVCHD videos come out spectacular! I'm sure that Gary would agree.
