Failed to start the image writing operation

Question

I received the following error message upon my project stating it was 100% complete. The system then shut down what I had been working on for hours. Why is this happening? I need this disc done by Thursday afternoon and now will have to attempt making it a third time. Help! TIA.

[1]What software do you actually have ? [name and version number] Easy CD & DVD Burning

[2]Which Operating System are you using? Windows XP

[3]Which application in the suite are you running? My DVD Express

[4]What exactly are you trying to do? I have about 19 small video clips that range between 1 minute to 15 minutes that I'm trying to put on one disc.

[5]How are you doing it?

-what steps are you taking

I add my videos (selecting the video/mpeg option), click on burn DVD

-what settings have you made? None that I know of.

The first time I did it it said the process 100% complete and then I got an error message that told me it needed to shut the program down.

The second time I changed nothing, but only uploaded 1 video and worked like a charm.

The third time I reduced the number of videos from 19 to 11 and got the error message that is in the title of this thread.

Now I'm on the fourth try, but I am saving it this time instead of trying to burn it.

I hope all of that makes sense.

Hello Sparkle,

Thanks very much for the detailed reply. It helps a lot to establish the baseline.

Now, in My DVD Express when you click on "Create Disc" there's a 'Burn Project' box which opens. You said you were getting an 'Error while burning image' and I wondered which box/boxes you had checked in that Burn Project box.

You shouldn't be getting errors about burning an image if you're trying only to burn to disc. I'd suggest you pick only one option at a time, to allow you to separate the process of coding the video and building a disc from the process of actually burning it. If you make an image only, you can later burn it to disc with Copy > Burn Image to Disc. Your last post indicates that you're already onto burning an image, so that's good.

If for some reason you have trouble with making an image, you can burn to a folder set and then later burn to disc from there.

Now, why are you getting errors? You didn't say what the total time for your 19 clips was, but please be aware that you can get one hour at best quality onto a single-layer DVD [more at lower resolution] and it is possible to upset the software by trying to cram too much on.

Also, there are many clips 'out there' which aren't really compliant with the standard, and may cause the encoder to barf. As well, Easy CD and DVD Burning has been deliberately limited by the designers so that it won't handle some formats of clips [to get you to buy the 'full version'] so that many of the popular types of clips choke the software.

This is where burning images or folder sets comes into its own. You can [and must if you're using this software] experiment to see if particular clips can't be processed, and you can do this by making images or folder sets without having to waste DVDs. [which you've worked out for yourself]

I'm sorry I can't give you a guaranteed way to make a perfect burn each time, but I'm hoping these ideas will steer you towards getting a decent burn more often.

Regards,

Brendon

You know what, I just reduced the number of clips and it worked like a charm. I was hoping to get everything on one disc, but it took 3. No big deal, just glad it's done. Thanks for your feedback!
