File Size Question

Celtic Exile

Question

I have an M2TS file which is about 1 hour long. It rings in at 1.8GB. I went to edit it in Videowave. Videowave of course converted it to an MPEG and it came in at 1.4GB. I did a couple of snips popped in a transition and the new length was 55minutes. I exported it as an Mpeg using the original file parameters (the MPEG convertion) so as to get the best results with no degradation. This file ended up being over twice the size. All I want to know is what I'm doing wrong exactly. Is it simply that the compression quality of Roxio is not as impressive as that of Sony?

Thanks for that advice. I exported it just because I'm new to Roxio and I was playing around it struck me as curious how I could remove content from an MPEG and save it at the same size, bitrate, and FPS then play it back on my computer (comparing the two files for objective quality and size) and I happened to not that the size was now double. When I drop it onto a DVD then yes it pretty much fills a 4.7GB disk and I know from looking about on the forum that 1 hour should do just that so I have no problem with that it was a question from a person trying to get to grips with something I am new to.

It would also depend greatly on what you Export it As???

If I take a little 57 KB mpg1 file and export it as a mts file at 1920 X 1080 it will swell to GB size and the quality will fall apart!

You didn’t do it in this case but keep in mind you cannot render UP with video.

Also keep in mind that the Preview windows are very low quality. There is too much going on to do high quality previews and render and run the editor, etc…

A lot of times you will see jerky preview & playbacks but the burned disc will be smooth and sharp.

I keep a short stack of DVD RW discs on hand for test burns before I waste an R disc. There is a worn path from my computers to my Players/TVs in the house

Yeah I'm starting to wear the carpet out too!

I am not trying to up render the video. I know how MPEGs are built up and how its supposed to work. Guess I will just keep plugging away and see if I can find out exactly what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks for all your help

Output As and Burning a DVD Movie both render, you have no choice about that whatsoever!!!

You asked why file size changes – Render

You asked why quality differs – could be preview window or Render results

See how Render keeps coming back into play :D

In the end you will have graduated when you stop worrying about the things you have no control over and move on to just making your production. Quality counts but that is easy to control.

Perhaps if you were to explain exactly step-by-step what you are doing we can help you. If you converted a file supposedly at the same settings as the original, it would be the same size as the original. If the file doubled in size then the settings are different.

Exporting to mpeg offers a lot of different setting giving a lot of different file sizes.

Why did you export it?

You simply save the VW project and add that to MyDVD.

File size is totally irrelevant. It will be rendered to the proper format upon Burn and time is the guiding factor…

What is your final burn to be, BD, AVCHD or DVD Movie?

Since you haven’t burned, how would know what the quality is?

In addition to what Jim said .. If you have a 1 hour movie and convert it to a standard DVD quality video it should have a file size of over 4GB. So obviously you selected a much lower quality when you did the conversion via Videowave. Again, as Jim said there is really no need to do any conversion!
