VHS video capture problems

digger12387

Question

The program I have is Creator 2009 special edition. I have been trying to copy some VHS taps to DVD. While capturing the video the sound and video is jumpy. Also after I have finished copying it to DVD, the sound and video jumps together when viewing it on TV.

Any suggestion? I really want save my daughters wedding videos to DVD.

Any other ideas? Thanks for all of your help so far guys.

Why yes I do… We have to get rid of the wrong drivers and get the right ones in there!

Print this out so you don’t miss a step!

Open the Device Manager (Win-Pause, hardware tab) and expand the sound, video and game controllers and stretch the window vertically to maybe twice its’ height.

Plug in the device and see what changes. – in this pic it shows up as USB Audio Device in the Sound, video and game controllers group as well as Other Devices.

Highlight and Delete both!

Either now or ahead of time download this file from Roxio – Driver (fixed!)

Remove the device wait a few seconds and then reinsert it. Cancel when XP offers to install and run the Driver file you downloaded.

Reboot just to settle everything (device plugged in) and recheck Device Manager. You should have these entries now:

Checking the Properties of the USB Capture Device, it should present this driver:

[fingers crossed]It should work now [/fingers]

I agree! Thanks for your help. I am beginning to believe it is the NIVIDA GeForce 6600 display that is the problem.

I love playing with my computer. There is always something new to learn.

Thanks again.

How much free space do you have on that laptop? I don't think its the NVIDIA graphics but your CPU that is the bottleneck

Ok you have done everything to install the correct drivers and you still can't capture using Creator 2009 nor with WMM.

That 1.8 gig processor, although above the system minimums, may be the issue that can't be resolved. The minimum specs are those that are OK for audio work and for slide show work but not for capture.

Sorry. We are beating a dead horse now.

That driver link is wrong. Try this one.

Also perhaps this will help.

BTW, you don't have VHS to DVD on your computer also, do you?

Thanks for your help. I downloaded the video capture usb driver and installed it with no changes to the capture. It is still choppy

In device manager it shows as Roxio video capture usb and is functioning ok

I find it interesting that in Universal serial bus my usb is listed as a composite device. When I checked the manufacturer Toshiba, they say my computer has four 2.0 usb ports. According to the link you gave me 2.0 usb should be listed as an enhanced usb.

I checked on the Toshiba website and there are no updates for my usb drivers.

Any more advice?

I am trying to download the driver but the link is not working. I went to Roxio and can't find the video driver either.

Help!!

In my device manager I don't have other devices showing. Also in my Sound, video, and game controllers list I have both audio and video devices showing

Isn't that the way they are suppose to show?

You need to invite someone over who knows PCs pretty well. Sometimes just having a second set of eyes on a problem will clear it up.

I have a Toshiba Qoismos laptop, with 1.8ghz intel processor, 1gb of ram. Yes I have updated creator to SP4.

I am at work right now and will try to use Movie maker as a test and all the other tests and let you know. Thanks for all the ideas.

I tried using Windows Movie Maker Jim, and I guess the drivers are not correctly installed because I kept receiving a message another device was using the USB2861. I then shut down creater 2009 removing it from the startup list, and still received the message. Don't know what is going on there.

I then cleaned up all my junk files using System Mechanic as well as the registry. Also did a defrag. I then did a reboot and tried to capture after shutting down my antivirus and anti-malware programs with no change with to the capture. Still captures the video and sound jumpy.

I haven't tried the Revo Uninstaller. I think System Mechanic cleans up my computer nicely, but will try it if you think I should.

I forgot to mention I have a pentium 3 processor with 1.8ghz clock speed. Is that considered an older processor?

Any other ideas? Thanks for all of your help so far guys.

I used capture video from import function. Even while capturing from the VHS tape the sound and video is jumpy.

I am capturing DV for AVI. My video card is nividia GeForce GO 6600 with 128mg memory and display 1280X800, 32 bit, 60hz. I went to the manufacture and updated the video card. It made no difference. I am using XP, and have 1GB of RAM.

Video chips, like the one you have can be a real issue. You do not have a real video card and it sounds like you are using a laptop. If so, make sure that the laptop is set to not go into power saving mode (full AC power while capturing and editing). What CPU do you have?

First, get rid of all junk files on your computer by using something like CCleaner (it is free; do not use the registry cleaner). If you have any programs that you don't use (like trial programs) get rid of them using Revo Uninstaller (also free). Reboot and run a defragmenter such as Auslogics Defragmenter (also free).

When you go to capture, make sure nothing else is running especially your anti-malware AND anti-virus programs. Some anti-virus programs scan everything written to your hard drive. That eats CPU and slows down your computer. Do the capture in 15 minute segments; you can edit out the overlaps later.

When you are ready to edit, use Video Wave to do the editing. Open it and go to the top menu and select tools, options and put a check mark next to software.

Have you updated to Creator 2009 SP4?

Maybe you just don’t have the horsepower to run the product? You never have stated your PC specs other that the video card…

I have installed it on a vastly underpowered PC and all runs great until you click Capture! Then both video as well as audio are mutilated

Since your run XP you could try using Windows Movie Maker as a test. It will capture from the USB 2861 device as long as the drivers are correctly installed. (don’t work in Vista)

That will really help pin it down.

I am also assuming that your source is not PAL/SCART?

First capture the video to your hard drive then use myDVD to burn the saved video file to the DVD. Don't use the Plug & Burn feature.

Actually you have not really told us how you are doing the capturing & burning. What program from the suite are you using? To what quality are you capturing and burning to DVD?

What are your system specs especially video card or graphics adaptor?
