MyDvd

Question

I am new at this, so I apologize if I'm posting in the wrong spot. I have come to the halfway point in my project that is a combo of pictures and video clips. I have added all of that, now I am laying in music and muting native in most places. Halfway through I am now getting this message "not able to put audio in this position" at every point that I try to insert it. I haven't changed how I am doing anything. I have spent hours trying to figure this out; I uninstalled, reinstalled and even went back to an earlier edit to start over; it still gets to this point and quits! Any suggestions? (I'm using MyDvd because I can retrieve my previous work and VW lost mine)

If you try adding more music to the SFX track, you will get the error message because something already exists in that track where the insertion point is located. But as Walt points out, you should be able to add more music on the Music track because there is nothing on that track at that location.

This is what my project looks like in the timeline so far. Where you have the cursor on the photo, is this where I should be placing the cursor when I go to add audio?

Yesterday afternoon I was able to get some music in on the music track for the first time in days. It kept giving me that same message but I just kept entering over and over, moving the "next frame" forward button in the large screen area after each try, hoping that this would be the place that it would accept audio. I did this for about 10-15 minutes without stopping and it finally took a song in the music track! My program must be messed up but I am determined to get the last song in today and be done with the whole thing.

I appreciate everyone's help on this; you guys are great!

Looking at Gary's image: Yes you should be able to add the audio clip anywhere on the music track in the "white section" as long as it is before the end of the video track. The music will be added where ever you place the blue cursor. This is what we have been telling you right from the start

Does this help?

By saved audio I just mean what I have in a folder for this project under My Music; sorry for the wrong terminology.

I am using the timeline instead of storyline for putting in the music. I have already experimented with the internal track and did find, as you say, that the audio only lasts for that portion of the clip, so I undid it and went back to trying music or sfx tracks.

Now, are you saying not to put the vertical blue "play" marker in that long space after a picture of the video (the long horizontal blue strip in the video timeline view) when trying to add music? I have almost tried every speck of the picture with the same "cannot add audio in this position" message. I may have been trying in the long blue strip of the video too.

Note that image "5" is an internal track of the video. Note the done button to the left of the timeline that shows that it is in the internal track of the video. If you see the colored tracks, you are in the internal track of the image or video. Look to the left to see what is in the internal track setting. Click done to get back to the normal track.

If you want to make the music last only in the video, then you add it there. If you want it to spill over to the images, then you cannot be in the internal track.

I'm not sure we are getting anywhere. :(

What do you mean by "saved" audio? Do not put audio on an internal track; it will play only while that image or video is visable. If you put it on the internal track, you would not be able to get it to go further than the end of the internal track. I guess that your description is confusing.

Are you still working in Create DVD - Advanced? These are shots using Edit Video -Advanced. Please point out what your screen looks like when you can't add more music.

If you mean the vertical line that runs through all of the tracks, then, yes, I have positioned that where I want to start on the right side of where the last song ended.

I only have 2 more songs to insert and I will have completed this project. Yesterday I was able to get 2 songs inserted on the sfx line (because it won't allow on music track anymore, no matter how far into the next video/pictures I go) and then it would not take anymore. I tried internal tracks, which worked but since this is a series of pieces of video, there are awkward silences and no continuity of the song, so I removed my song from there. Yesterday myguggi (who suggested the sfx track too) said to also try the narration track, which I will do shortly.

Will keep you posted on the progress, or lack of!

Well, the narration track won't accept saved audio, only what I record from a mic.

Still not able to insert into music or sfx tracks.

Go to Timeline

WHERE is the 'blue line'? That is the insertion point. Just like a word processor, you must position the blue line FIRST WHERE you want the music. You don't need to select any track first. When you add the music, you will get a dialog box asking which track. Where the blue line is what matters.

I will give that a shot.

Hey, that worked! I do have pictures and transitions where I have been trying to insert music into the music track, which worked before; I have no clue why it is not accepting music in the music track but if I can successfully burn a DVD with the fx track, then fine! Thank you so much. I will let you know if there are any more problems that pop up.

I did. But, just now I went to the point where I want to put my music and noticed that the "internal track" setting was greyed out from that point forward as I move the cursor. I back tracked to the last successful point in adding music and the "internal track" was not greyed out. Is this what you were talking about? How can I fix this, or can I?

I'm messed up! I just rechecked my project and it was greyed because I clicked the music track; sorry for the confusion. How can I know if I'm in an internal track?

Are you trying to add audio where there is no video?

The internal track will always be greyed out to the right of the last video track

Why don't you add the audio on one of the other audio tracks such as the sound effects or narration track? If you do that you can overlap the new audio clip over the last few seconds of the audio clip on the music track. You can then fade out the music track while fading in the other audio track.

Did you follow the video including having the cursor where you want the music to start but no on another piece of music?

No matter how I try to add the music to the music track I get the same message. I just ungreyed the "internal track" and tried again, this time getting a box with the option of adding it to the internal track of the video, so I clicked add to music track but still got the "unable to add at this position" notice.

I don’t do much audio and the last time I tried to advise someone, I was so far off the other Guru’s wanted to lynch me

But you have provided enough details that someone who knows something about it should be able to respond now.

Thank you for your time Digital Guru!

Three things that you must check. (well a couple more)

1) You have selected the music track

2) The music track where you want to add the music doesn't have another piece of music in that place.

3) That the piece of music you are trying to add isn't at the end of the production.

4) The music must not be DRM protected such as from ITunes or anothe on line store (you would gt a different message I think.)

5) You are not in an internal track of a video or image.

Watch this; there may be a hint that you can use. Just use your music rather than SmartSound.

points 1-4 are checked. I'm not sure if I'm in an internal track, but don't think so. I have tried to insert audio throughout the rest of the production and am unable, getting that same message. I haven't used any SmartSound music in the production.

Doing it in MyDVD is a very bad idea… In this case I understand but your setting up for a fall.

What track are you trying to add on. In fact it would be best to describe each step up to the error message.

I click onto the play place that I want to put my new audio, then click on the music track, then click on add audio, then pick my selection, get the question box for "add to music track" or the other option is "add to sound effects track", so I pick music track, then it gives the message "unable to add in this position" (or similar phraseology). I move on down the video line (in timeline) and try again only to get the same result every place I try to insert. It seems that the rest of my video won't accept music.
