Toast only copies part of DVD

ronewby

Question

Using OS X 10.5.7 and Toast 10.0.2 on a G4 MDD FW800 PowerMac Desktop Computer.

Recording to 4.7GB DVD+R.

I have created a DVD in iDVD consisting of 1) a slideshow 1.79 GB in size (per iDVD), and 2) a DVD-ROM section of 820 MB (per iDVD). The DVD was created via the burn function of iDVD, and plays back fine using DVD Player at my computer or by playing it onto a widescreen TV; I can also successfully access the contents (a set of jpeg files) of the DVD-ROM section.

Opened Toast and selected 'Copy:Disc Copy'. After all preparations were completed, I clicked on the Record button, and the operation proceeded to apparent completion, including an indicated successful verification. However, upon opening the DVD copy onto my desktop, and using Get Info, all I find are two folders: 'VIDEO_TS' (1.52 GB: 1,637,074,944 bytes) and 'AUDIO_TS' (zero KB: Zero bytes); the 'original' DVD shows three folders: 'VIDEO_TS' (1.52 GB: 1,637,074,944 bytes), 'AUDIO_TS' (zero KB: Zero bytes) and '[My File Name] DVD-ROM Contents' (1.05 GB: 1,129,307,476 bytes).

Thus, the video portion of the 'original' DVD is being copied successfully by Toast, but the DVD-ROM section of it is being missed completely.

Does anyone have any ideas as to why Toast 10 is exhibiting this behavior?

I don't know why Toast leaves out the data portion but the workaround is easy. Choose DVD-Rom (UDF) as the format in the Toast Data window. Click new disc and name your disc. Drag in the contents from your DVD. If you have a second optical drive to burn the disc then click the burn button. If you only have one drive it's easiest to copy the contents of the DVD to the Finder and use that as the source for making your DVDs.

Thanks for your reply, tsantee.

Your suggestion worked great, and allowed me to make my duplicate copies.

I'd still like to know if anyone can suggest what's going on in Toast such that the copy function is not doing the whole job, however.

I've come up with a little more information on what is happening here; hopefully there is something here which might suggest what's up.

When I start up Toast, select Copy:Disc Copy, and then insert the 'Master' DVD, the Toast window shows:

Read From: <No Volume>

Summary:

<No Volume>

2.58 GB DVD-ROM

In the window-bottom size bar, the indication is: 2.58 GB on 1 disc

This information corresponds to what is totally on the 'Master' DVD (VIDEO_TS folder, AUDIO_TS folder and the folder of jpegs)

After anywhere from five to ten minutes, the Toast window information displayed changes to:

Read From: <TCRR_2009_Surf_Class> (this is the name of the DVD to be copied)

Summary:

Video: All (8 movies and 1 extra, 1:04:46)

Audio: All (Unknown Language PCM Stereo)

Subtitles: All (Unknown Language)

Menus: Yes

Auto-Compression: Off

In the window-bottom size bar, the indication is: 1.53 GB on 1 disc

This switch in the size value for how much information is on the DVD (from 2.58 GB to 1.53 GB) corresponds to equaling the size of only the VIDEO_TS folder. The data in the folder of jpegs is appears to be disregarded at this point, even though it was initially recognized in the definition of the <No Volume> indications.

Can anyone make any sense out of this?
