5.2 Basic stopped copying cd's or burnnig single songs from my music files

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am new, so excuse me if I am in the wrong forum. a month ago my Roxio CD Creator 5.2 Basic stopped copying cd's or burnin music.

1.-I get this when trying to copy a cd>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Easy Cd Creator Engine Initialization has failed. (Could not initialize engine)

2.- I get this when tryin to burn songs from music files.>>>>>>>>>>Disc copier could not locate a supported cd-rom reader. You will not be able to make disc to disc copies.

I unistalled/installed my Roxio cd with same results. I called Dell and we played for a hour with no results. They said I might have a virus or there is a problem with Roxio and to try another software. I downloaded Cheetah, then Sonic Burner and Real Player. None worked.

By the way, I don't have Service Pack 2. I installed it when it first came out and it messed up my photo software, so I got rid of it. I thank you in advance for any help or a thread to get help at. John

Try the following:

Uninstall using the add/remove in the Control Panel.

Then use this http://tools.roxio.com/support/tools/roxizap.exe to remove anything left over.

Install ECDC5 from the cd. If you need any updates for your Dell OEM software contact Dell

Well, the first problem may be solved by running the engforce.exe program, but I haven't been able to find a link to it anywhere yet. I'll keep looking.

But, since none of the other applications worked, we have to suspect a problem with your drive or system. Does Windows show the drive in the drive list of Windows Explorer? Can you read/play discs in that drive? If not, or Windows doesn't recognize it, then possibly the drive itself has died, or the cable has come off, so remove and reseat the cable to make sure that isn't the problem.

Let us know about the drive.

I would suspect the first problem was caused by adding some other, newer, burning software, which has "broken" ECDC 5 by overwriting some files with the same name and different contents.

If not, then adding RealPlayer would've done that while you were making attempts to try things.

If you have WinPlayer 9 or 10, that would've "broken" ECDC 5, and WinPlayer 9 doesn't come completely back out short of reformatting the Hard Drive. (There is a way to do it posted on General Chat, but I sure wouldn't attempt it!) I don't know if the famous "Dell Patch" (see pinned post at top of board) would fix that for a Dell computer or not.

As the the second problem, it sounds like there may ALSO be a mechanical problem - see Dave's sugestions on that. Any mechanical problem will need to be solved, whether by checking connections or replacing the burner, before ANY burning software will work.

Hi Gang

Thanks for all the replies! I decided to do a system restore last night to get rid of all those other burners in case they were making things worse. Plus I noticed my junk mail tripled overnight (not sure if that was related, but seems like most things come with a price. I kept looking at threads and noticed that some had recommended that DEll Patch to someone with a probleme kind of like mine. I downloaded it and everything is fine for now Yipeeeeee!!!!! I emailed the DELL tech that tried to help me the other night and asked why they did not know of the DEll patch. Will let you know if it messes up again. By the way, it could still play cd's just not burn anything. Thanks again.

The Dell patch that is pinned is to update version 5.3 xxxx, and you said you had 5.2......but if it worked for you, what the heck.
