I have just installed the ESD version of Roxio 2010, under Windows Vista Home Premium.
I've used Video Copy and Convert perfectly successfully in previous versions.
On opening VCC for the first time in 2010, I clicked the "options" button to see the choices, saw no need to change settings, clicked "cancel", and Windows told me there was an error with the program and it had to close.
Nothing daunted I restarted the program, resolved to leave the "options" button well alone for the time being, and successfully converted a wmv file to iPod mp4.
My next effort was to extract a single title from a dvd.
VCC happily cached the title, and began to convert the file, but with subtitles added.
I clicked "cancel", VCC accepted this, and halted the process.
Now I had to use the "options" button. Sure enough the default setting was "subtitles on - english". I changed the setting to "none", and tried to redo the conversion.
This time VCC simply froze. After waiting I tried to cancel the process. VCC acknowledged the request, but froze again in the cancellation process.
I could only escape by closing VCC in Windows Task Manager.
By this time VCC was exhibiting various signs of distress.
I tried to "repair" using Control Panel, but got the message that the required installation files were not present in the system. I checked, and they weren't.
I tried to "repair" by re-running the installation program - and got the same message. This time however, I had monitored the temporary installation folders and I saw the correct files being unzipped to the correct folders - but files and folders were deleted just before the repair process kicked in.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled three times, but these fault symptoms remain the same - I've checked yet again whilst composing this post.
Standard conversions between formats are OK, though I haven't tried them all.
Modifications through the "custom" button seem OK, though I haven't tried them all.
But the "options" button gives me a shock every time I touch it. Changes to "options" settings cause VCC to crash. The changes are lost in the crash, so I can't get what I want even by brute force.
So I think:
1. There's a glitch lurking behind the "options" button in VCC - whether it's a fundamental flaw in VCC, or in the specific version of VCC supplied by ESD, or through some rogue interaction with Windows Vista I don't know. Is this the origin of any problems other users are having?
2.The Roxio ESD installer eliminates any future "repair" support, for any module, by deleting its own installation files - or at least allowing them to be deleted by some other process.
