Number of Panels 0; Preview screen blank

jwarddesigns

Question

Error says the number of panels is zero. Preview screen is blank/black, but a thumbnail is in the storyboard/timeline. Audio works if I push play, but no video. Can't edit in MyDVD or VideoWave. I also sometimes get the error number 80040273 when I close out the program.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled EMC8 (not deluxe) twice. I have DirectX9 or higher, video card with 64MB. Running on XP Home edition. It may help to know I am using imported IFO files converted to DivX, but the problem happens with other formats, too (.avi and .mov).

HELP??? I need to burn 30 DVD's for my neice's middle school chorus by Tuesday (5/30/06)

UPDATE: I updated my Via/S3G graphics card driver and got the latest update for DirectX. Uninstalled & reinstalled a third time. I still cannot preview menus or movies in either MyDVD (menus & movies) or Video Wave (movies) and I get the error "The number of panels in the poduction is 0" in Video Wave when I try to edit.

I'm running Windows XP on a HP Pavillion, 2.2 GHz Athlon processor, 448 RAM, 64MB Via/S3G Unichrome IGP graphics card.

Thanks for checking back on me. I had tried reinstalling the program before, but this time I just did the repair as you suggested. Unfortunately, I still have the same results.

Any other ideas?

I had similar symptoms (panel 0, video preview blank, and "random" task menu options greyed out). Based on discussion board browsing I ran through all the suggestions I found posted (updated drivers to latest version - Jul 2006), multiple application reinstalls in different orders (including reboots at various steps), clean registry entries, repair option, etc) without any luck. Although both DirectX test passed and both Roxio tests (hw & sw) passed, it still didn't work. I did have an integrated video card (chip actually), and by process of elimination went and bought a dedicated AGP slot video card. All the symptoms above disappeared after installation of video card without any application reconfiguration. The bottom line, good luck getting an integrated video chipset to work - I spent more effort trying than the price of a video card.

That fix was amazing! Not only did it fix the problem I now have access to features (transitions and the like) that I used to have in prior versions that I thought were just removed from this one! So my problem is fixed and EMC8 plays better than any version I've ever had, the preview is almost real time where it's always been jerky before, like it's reaching memory errors or lack of processor speed, but now the application just flies!

That little 'fix' should be a regular update, but when I click on check for updates there aren't any to find, go figure!

Thanks guys for all who sent me in the right direction, this is the best EMC I've ever owned!

You are welcome, and have fun making your producitons.

I have received this error for the first time, although I've been having issues on and off for a while now. I do not have an SIS video card, nor am I using an integrated video card, I have an AGP 8x ASUS Geforce FX 5200. Updated drivers do nothing. Repair of the Software does nothing. The problem I am having doesn't even happen every time I open VideoWave 8, but sometimes I get a black preview pane and cannot vie my production. Other times it opens fine and I work just fine for hours. The 'sub error' when I ask for details is "Mixer is NULL"

I'm looking for a way to provide more consistency, any ideas?

riversidekid,

If you are getting a mixer is null error, then look at this post (which is pinned to the top of this section of the boards btw)

Yea and people don't believe us. :) Thanks for posting that.

Chuck, try doing a repair of the software, through Add/Remove Programs. I think that I have seen that error message posted before, but I can't remeber when.

Hello,

I have successfully updated the drivers. The problem is exactly the same. When I load a video into VideoWave, I see it in the timeline. I get an error message ,however, telling me that "The number of panels in the production is 0". I get this in spite of being able to see the panel in the timeline. Needless to say, it wont't render, preview, or even edit.

If any one can help me, I would appreciate it. If upgrading to version 9 will help, I am willing to try. If the new version is no different, then I hate to waste the money.

Thanks,

chuck

Thanks for the reply. I am trying to upgrade the drivers now, but without broadband, it takes a while to download the rather massive file(the first time it was corrupted).

I am curious though. It seems to me that the problem is in the program thinking that there are 0 panels in the timeline. Any idea why it thinks that?

thanks again,

chuck

Update the drivers for your video card to the 91.47's if you have not already.

Hello,

I have the same problem, 'Number of panels 0', can't play preview. I can, however, see the video in the first panel. Needless to say it won't render. Again, it says that there are 0 panels in the production.

I should say that it worked fine once, and the next time I tried to use Video Wave I got this error, and have gotten it each time since.

I don't believe it is a hardware issue, but I ran the graphics test as recommended and it works just fine in hardware. As for the computer,

Gateway FX400

Intel Pentium D cpu 3.4Ghz

2.00 GB of Ram

NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GTX

I bought the thing in February.

Any help would be appreciated. I apologize in advance if I have violated any protocols in this post, please tell me my mistakes, and I will not let it happen again.

Thanks

First you need to know more about your computer. Depending on how old it is, the slot for a graphics card could be PCI, AGP or PCIe. Videowave and MyDVD includes technology that will actually off-load the rendering of video to the graphics card's processor.

Have you tried running the graphics test? Run Videowave or MyDVD. On the menu, click TOOLS / OPTIONS and run the graphics test. When the test is finished, does it stay on 'software' rendering. That means your video card or chipset does not fully support DirectX commands needed for the 3D transitions/effects and those will not be available.

If you are leary about opening your computer, ask a friend to help. You need to know which type of slot is available and purchase a card that fits. You don't need to purchase anything real expensive. I have one that was only $69.99 after rebates.

The Via/S3 Unichrome is usually a chipset that is built onto the motherboard and uses part of your machine's RAM for video. These chipsets do not fully support DirectX which Videowave and MyDVD uses extensively. You would have better success using EMC8 with a separate video card.

Thanks for the reply! How would I go about choosing/installing a separate video card? I'm new to this - my machine has always done what I needed it to, graphics-wise, until now. (I run Photoshop/Image Ready and other animation programs daily with no problem.)
