Text Effects Control

I'm playing around with Text Effects, and I don't seem to be able to control where the effect begins and where I want it to end. While I can move the starting point.... it just always adjusts the ending point and vice versa. As if there is a fixed path ratio that the effect will always take.

 

I hope I explained this clearly. Is this just the way the effects work, or am I missing something to have more control over where its beginning point starts and where it final resting place is.
