DPriest
I currently have Easy CD Creator 5 Running windows XP During the install of AVG update i am getting this message. Installer has detected that there is an outdated version of the program Roxio Easy CD & DVD Creator, which contains a bug that (among others) can cause problems with AVG 9.0. We recommend you to update this software prior to installation of AVG 9.0. An update package is available on the Roxio web page. I could not fine any updates for 5, so wondering if there even is one, or i need to get an all together newer version. Thanks for any input
KenLS
I also have this issue on a Dell Server that originally came w/ this installed. The server is running Windows 2000 Server. Newer Roxio Programs don't seem to support this W2KServer software. What do I need to do? No, upgrading to a newer Server/Server Software is NOT an option. vals
Help! I have the same issue as DPriest. I can't reinstall AVG because of an issue with Roxio. I can't remove my Roxio easy cd creator because I can't find my disc. Add and Remove ask to insert the installation disc. Do you know if it can be removed anyway without the disc? Thanks

JuliaK
I have the same situation as DPriest describes in the 1st post. I tried installing the patch - unsuccessfully. I got the message: "This updater is designed for CDR4 drivers 7.1 and above." When I go into device manager, I see the following for my cd-rom drive: HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8400B, which has driver 5.1.2535.0 assigned. Do I need a different patch? Do I have an outdated driver? Thanks for your help.
Brendon
JuliaK, Please tell us some basic facts: -what Roxio software are you running? [name and version, please] -what Operating System is it running in? -is the patch file you downloaded called updatecdr4_53_71.exe and is it 188.406 bytes? -exactly what error did you get when you tried to use the patch? JuliaK
Brendon, I'm running Roxio Easy CD Creator 5, ver 5.2.0.56 SP1 Running Windows XP ver 2002 SP3 Yes, the patch I downloaded is called updatecdr4_53_71.exe, and is it 188.406 bytes. When I tried to run the patch, a pop-up displayed the message "This updater is designed for CDR4 drivers 7.1 and above.", along with an OK button. Thanks for any suggestions you may have. Brendon
Hi Julia, You seem to be running an OEM version, [Dell?] so things might not be quite the same as they are with my system. However if you have an OK button, have you clicked on that ? What happened ? The CDR4 file in XP is called cdr4_xp.sys, and it is usually in the C:\Windows\System32\Drivers folder. If you locate that and right-click on it, and select Properties > Version, Windows should display what version it is. Version 4_53_41 represents version 7.1, and the updater should work as long as your current version is equal to or greater than 4_53_71. If this updater doesn't work, please tell me what version of CDR4 you do have [by the method above] and what complaint the updater made when it refused to work. If it doesn't work I may have to reinstall Easy CD Creator 5 and go investigate it for you. Regards, Brendon
JuliaK
Hi Brendon, Yes, I've got a Dell Dimension 4550. When I clicked on the "ok" button, the pop-up disappeared, and the patch was no longer executing. The cdr4_xp.sys file is version 5.2.0.91 on my pc. When I attempted to run the updater, the message "This updater is designed for CDR4 drivers 7.1 and above" displayed (along with a white "X" in a red circle), I selected OK, and the updater was no longer running. I cannot get it to run. I appreciate your continued assistance! Julia
Brendon
Hi Julia, I'm really unimpressed by AVG and its quibbling! Right, time we got out the big guns, I think. Plan: Rename your 5.2 copy of cdr4_xp.sys, and put a copy of the 5.3 file in that folder to see if it will fix the problem. Renaming your file from cdr4_xp.SYS to cdr4_xp.OLD will take it out of play without destroying it, in case you need to go back to the original state. [1] Can you get at that file in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers and rename it? You might have to do it in safe mode if Windows won't let you touch it. [2] Download this file cdr4_xp.txt It's the 5.3.5.10 version of cdr4_xp.sys, but it has been renamed so I could post it. [3] Rename my file to cdr4_xp.sys [just change the extension from .txt to .sys] [4] Copy this file into C:\Windows\System32\Drivers, where it should take the place of your old file. [5] Restart Windows and see if ECDC 5 still works [6] If it does, see if AVG has stopped whining at you. If it didn't work, delete my file and rename yours back to what it was, and let me know the bad news. Regards, Brendon
JuliaK
Hi again Brendon, I was able to follow all the steps fine, until the last one....unfortunately, AVG did not stop whining. Thank-you for the creativity, and sending me the cdr4 file. Here's what the AVG message says - Installer has detected that there is an outdated version of the program Roxio Easy CD & DVD Creator, which contains a bug that (among others) can cause problems with AVG 9.0. We recommend you to update this software prior to installation of AVG 9.0 An update package is available on the Roxio web page. [Next], [Exit] I could actually select the "next" button, and proceed with the install. What do you think? I also think the AVG folks could use a grammar lesson, or two. Brendon
Hello Julia [waves] Sorry to be so long replying, but I've been off trying things out and it has taken a lot of repetition. I was trying out that update patch on everything I had from version 5.0. It didn't work with 5.1.154, and a number of other minor updates, but I finally got it to run against version 5.3.1.154. I couldn't check against 5.2 because that's an OEM version and I don't have it. Anyway, when it finally ran it overwrote the old file with version 7.1.0.190, and here it is. cdr4_xp.txt Would you please try the magic with this file (renamed) and see if AVG is still sucking lemons? If AVG still gives you trouble, there is one final solution I can offer. It's a "placeholder" file I found which seems to act like a dummy file. If you use this file AVG is sure not to know it because it has almost no code in it at all - it's empty-CDR4. Lord only knows what it is used for, but it should shut AVG up. Downside is that it might stop ECDC from working, but I don't think that will happen. MTcdr4_xp.txt I'm keen to hear how the saga ends Regards, Brendon
JuliaK
SUCCESS - finally! I was able to install AVG with the 7.1.0.190 cdr4 file. Thank-you so much for all your help, Brendon. I am amazed - and grateful - at all the time you spent figuring out what would allow me to get beyond this issue. Thanks again. Julia

waltlyzb
I've also downloaded the AVG 9.0 program and got the same message about needing an update. Trouble was the Roxio came with the PC I purchase back in 2006. And the documentation with the PC did not even mention Roxio. I'm not sure what to do here and what to use without problems. The PC uses Windows XP Home Edition and was purchased at Best Buy.

waltlyzb
I haven't for a number of reasons. First, it took a number of attempts before I succeeded downloading the AVG 9.0 over my dialup connection. (The reason I have dialup is a separate issue.) It takes about 5 hours and if it loses the connection the download is lost. Yes, there is a pause button but if the connection gets lost it's gone regardless. (Stupid system! Earthlink has a smart download program that keeps the program if the connection gets lost so you don't have to start again.) I don't want to go through another 5 hours of waiting. Second, I don't know what version of Roxio I have. It came with the PC and I didn't even know about it until AVG 9.0 told me. I got the PC back in 2006 and the documentation didn't say anything about it. It has a CD/DVD burner program but it doesn't say anything about Roxio. I don't even know if the PC needs it. I tried to find out. Even Roxio customer support couldn't tell me and didn't say how to find out. They said get back with them when I do. Third, I do the wrong thing and I have to start over or even fix some other problem because of my attempts. I'm not a newbie but it seems the latest programming outputs from companies are getting less detailed so you need to get back with them. So this is where I stand. I'm thinking of trying this even if the PC crashes and the hard drive burns. These days I can't afford a new PC. Fortunately Windows XP IS a robust system. It even survived a successful Trojan attack. My previous AntiVirus didn't catch it in time because it was brand new. It took about a month to fully restore the PC. When the virus attacked I slowed it but this got so bad it restored. I was lucky, nothing got lost except some emails. (Maybe I should delete the program since I can't tell if I need it?) You got my entire viewpoint.

leverite
Brendon's latest help for Julia worked for me too, and I don't even have EZCD 5 installed on my PC anymore. I had run into comatibility trouble with some other installation program a few years back and had toasted it then. AVG has a link to Roxio's website, but it's fairly useless, IMO. This software is long-extinct, and Roxio wants you to buy a newer version if you want their help. AVG has a tech forum of their own, so I subscribed and posted a link to this discussion. I'll add a link to that as a cross-reference as well. http://forums.avg.com/ww-en/avg-free-forum...0179#post_80179 They have a direct link to downloading the newer SYS file, which sounds like it works, too. http://www.roxio.com/enu/support/mserr/cdr4_7.html One more repetitive thing. I've already asked this question on the AVG forum, but I'll ask it here also. "I'm curious though ... for those who have uninstalled all Roxio EZCD versions ... can we (could I have) just simply deleted the "CDR4_XP.SYS" file?"
