Popcorn 4 and Elgato Turbo.264 HD

scotty321

Question

Can anybody please guide us on how to use Popcorn 4 and the Elgato Turbo.264 HD? We own both of these products, but the Popcorn 4 users manual has ZERO INFORMATION on how to use Popcorn 4 with the Elgato Turbo.264 HD.

We are trying to convert unencrypted DVDs into MPEG4 format using Popcorn 4. We plug in the Turbo.264 HD, it shows up in System Profiler, and it shows up in ElGato's own Turbo.264 HD application. In Popcorn 4, we have selected the preference to use the Turbo.264 when it is available.

HOWEVER, whenever we try to convert our DVDs using Popcorn 4, the red light on the Turbo.264 HD NEVER LIGHTS UP! The light never lights up at all, indicating that the Turbo.264 is NOT being used at all. So Popcorn 4 is not seeing our Turbo.264 device, even though we have it plugged into the computer and even though we have the preference selected in Popcorn 4 and even though the System Profiler sees the device. Plus, we're not getting any faster speeds than when the Turbo.264 is unplugged from the machine. So clearly, Popcorn 4 is totally ignoring our Turbo.264 device.

Can somebody please tell us how we can get Popcorn 4 to use this Turbo.264 HD device? We can't figure this out, and there is no documentation on this feature.

It's a real shame that nobody at Roxio has documented this feature, which is marketed on their web page as a major feature of Popcorn 4?

Thank you so much!!

You probably are using the wrong export setting. It doesn't seem logical but don't use the setting labeled H.264. Instead use AppleTV or one of the other presets. You can see a description of the conversion settings after choosing a preset. The only other thing is to make sure the Turbo unit is plugged in before launching Popcorn. The light will go on when it is active and you'll see the pulsating dots in the progress window.

Thanks so much for your help!

We've chosen MPEG-4 as the type of export, and then we've clicked on the "change..." button to change the settings to make it a very small video. We're exporting our videos at "MPEG-4 Basic", and a small size of only 160x120 resolution.

Will this setting not be supported by the Turbo.264 and Popcorn?

And which product is to blame here -- Turbo.264 or Popcorn?

Thanks!

Scott

As I noted, you are not choosing one of the settings in which the Turbo.264HD device is supported in Popcorn. It works with several of the presets but not all. My recommendation for converting videos from a video DVD is the AppleTV setting.
