Widescreen

Question

Hi all

I’m transferring recordings from my Sky+ box to my laptop and the ones that are 4.3 picture format are ok but when it’s 16.9 i.e. widescreen the 16.9 picture is squashed and transfer as 4.3.

I have had a look around the software but can’t find any way to change this.

Any help please, thanks

You have to pick the best solution for you needs, but there is no magic make it fit solution…

http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articles/ana...creenorama.html"]Here[/url] is a pretty through explanation of all the different ratios that have been used and their affect.

One other option is to use VW and place a Color Panel on the Video Track – Black is a good color.

Then add your movie to the Overlay Track and position and size to give yourself the best compromise.

In the end you either crop out some of the image or end up with black bars somewhere, that is the reality of ratios.

I contacted Roxio technical people and i was advised it only outputs at 4.3 format, well once again i have wasted my money!

Thanks anyway

No, that is not accurate…

If it outputs in 4:3 and you truly have a 16:9, it will import properly using the settings I gave you.

If it does not, then you do not have a true 16:9 source!

Then you go to the Plan B that I outlined.

You are stuck on the idea that there is some magic solution to all of this. There is not and the reality is we have all been dancing around Ratio problems since DVD Video became practical.

And it is not just PC Video, I watched 2 "widescreen" Blu-ray movies this week. One had black bars, one did not. If Hollywood can't be consistent, what makes you think anyone can.

Edit: One thing I should have offered earlier! If you would make a 5 or 10 second capture at DV HQ setting you could put it on http://www.UpforDown.com or any other service so I will be able to download it…

I would be more than happy to take a look at it and see what I can do with it. But I really need the RAW capture rather than a snip from VW as that will alter the file.

It captures what it sees… Thus the output is not actually 16:9, which is not uncommon.

If you add it to the VideoWave and have VW set to Widescreen and the Production Settings, set to Fill Screen. You must do this before adding the clip to VW.

If you are going to burn a DVD, then Save and use the VW Project file (dmsm) in MyDVD.

If you are not going to Burn, use the Export As and output it into the format of your choice.

Hi thanks for the quick reply

That still is no good, i have it set to fill screen but what it does is it cuts off the top and bottom of the movie to fit into the full screen but the picture is still squashed.

The problem is its being captured at 4.3 resolutions

Thanks.
