Upgraded Software for Windows 7

TONYNINER

Question

I recently purchased Creator 2010 as an upgrade for my now useless windowsXP VHS2DVD software and usb device and also upgraded to windows 7. I attemped to capture vhs video, but in the preview screen the video is either jerky or speeds up, then slows down. I have no idea what would cure this problem, but any suggestions would be helpful to eliminate this problem.

My computer is: Asus P4P800E-D with an Intel 3.0GHz cpu, 2GB memory, 1 Terrabyte SATA HDD with windows 7 installed, and have 2nd 200GB SATA hdd as a spare, nothing on it but to capture video. My video card is a nVidia 7600GS AGP with latest driver installed.

It would be nice to get this all working correctly as my vhs collection is in need of being transferred to dvd.

Thank you.

Hi Tony -

Really interesting results. I'll keep my fingers crossed for C2010...

Thanks for the info!

Jon

Well, I thought I would backtrack and best to start clean from scratch. Easy VHS2DVD was made to work on XP and Vista. But the USB Adapter is only applicable with C2010 on windows 7, so I took this route to make sure I got rid of the problem 1st before I re-install on my 2nd HDD windows 7. Do not worry, I will be keeping winXP since I now have it working, but I also might as well get the best of both worlds and be able to use Windows 7 as well!

Oh, 1 more thought, I do not know if this had anything to do with this issue, but I also think that, since I have to add motherboard drivers (INF, Audio, LAN Card only) with my Asus OEM mobo disk to windows XP, I could not perform this operation on windows 7 using the same disk.

Look at my signature, pc 13 months old when I installed W-7 Pro X64.

My mother board disc did not have updated drivers for W-7 either, not released when I bought the mother board.

I went to Asus website and downloaded all W-7 chipset and other Asus related drivers and utilities for my clean W-7 Pro X64 install..

Forgive my muddying the water but what version of W7 do you have Tony?

Today I just tried for the first time (and have so much more playing to do) running the XP Mode in W7 (for Ultimate and Pro versions only) and I had no trouble installing Creator 2009 in XP Mode. C2009 is not W7 compatible but I'm thinking since I have 2010 and don't really need C2009, I may remove it and install VHS to DVD in XP Mode. This would save me the minor trouble of booting in XP or Vista.

Thought this might be useful to you if you have the higher versions of W7.

Hey Tony -

The machine looks rock solid. Here's a quickie list to look over. It's for installing, but many of the suggestions apply post-install as well: Preparing your computer for installing Roxio products

Let us know which ones you completed as far as updates go and myself and other members can take it from there.

Thanks,

Jon

Hello Jon, I followed all of Roxio's suggestions for installing this product. Everything that could be done is done!

I installed 2010 first, then I added the USB connector to computer. I hope this was correct as I had no info on the proper procedure for installing this software with the usb device. I purchased the download.

I do not have any other burning software installed. Basically stripped down computer just to get Roxio product to work correctly, as this computer was to be dedicated solely for the purpose of vhs to dvd conversions.

Thank you for your reply.

Hey Tony -

Ugh. I need to find a way to add this to our online content to make sure users do this: when installing a usb device make you have it connected to the back of your computer when installing the software.

However, it seems the device is recognized as you are able to see video as well, so I don' think you need ot reinstall.

If I remember correctly, the 7600GS was included in Dell Dimensions as recently as 2007 and they are good cards, but I haven't heard of an AGP connection on a computer for a couple of years - most are PCIe now. The mother board sounds like it maybe an older one. Where I'm going with this is that we need to verify that you have a USB 2.0 connection.

Again, make sure that the capture device is connected to the back of the computer as that, if your mother board does have a USB 2.0 connection, where it will be. Step 3 in the article Resolving common capture issues with the Roxio Video Capture USB device can help you determine this.

Lastly, please confirm you have made all the updates in that first article I gave: Video card, WMP, Windows OS, even BIOS (long shot, but you never know ;)) ...

Thanks,

Jon

As you may well know, since installing windows 7, I noticed that all my drivers are as new as you can get. Same with Flashplayer, WMP on windows 7, DirectX, and anything else that could be applied to my computer has been installed. I have not however installed any Apple software (I don't have an iPod, so I really don't need this app, or do I?). So all the bases have been covered before I installed 2010.

Yes, the usb is connected in the back and all ports are usb 2.0. So basically I have set everything up like it should (I hope?) There are 8 usb ports on ths mobo. This Asus board is a socket 478 and was custom built by me before the 778 boards came out, but I have just as much firepower with this machine that you could ask for. Also this is not a Dell computer.

*UPDATE* - I just finished installing a newer video card driver just released by nvidia, it has been installed. Also, I want to note the usb drivers are microsoft and is dated 2006. I do not know of anything newer.

I am going off-line, have to restart. be back in a few...

Hey Tony -

This is a real stumper. While the software is jerky, you are able to view and see the video which means the software, for the most part is working fine as as is the install. Generally, what you are experiencing is a performance issue and other than the USB 2.0 verification (which you did) and the the video card drivers being updated from NVIDIA's site, I'm not sure here to go from here.

No need to install Apple software.

I have installed Creator 2010 w/ USB capture on my Dell M65 (a super dirty OS) and it's a two year old laptop with a Dual 2 Ghz, 2GB of ram, and an old video card. I just captured something last month and it worked fine on Windows XP. Creator 2010 is 100% Windows 7 certified and I have also completed successful captures in Win 7 machines.

Try performing a Roxio update by going to Help > Check for updates.

Try step 4 in the article Improving Creator and Easy VHS to DVD performance

Also, please verify that you went to NVIDIA's site and downloaded the latest video card driver. These don't always appear in Windows Update.

Jon, Latest nvidia driver installed (date:11/2009) I have not tried this yet.

I am stumped as well, And I have scoured thr Roxio website for any and all updates for 2010, only 1 available and installed. All other updates do not apply.

I don't have any other options left.

I suffer from the same problem even when I am capturing from a Firewire connected camcorder. See my computer specs below; ATI video card. I have to use a third party capture utility to capture the video and then convert it so Video Wave can use it.

It seems to occur because the program thinks there are hundreds of scene changes in a short video where nothing is changing. I don't know of any way to turn off the scene detection. I remember one poster who had the same problem but upgrading to W7 helped?

Well, here was my final solution, I think this may have fixed my problems:

1) went and bought new power and connection cables for both sata drives, the reason for this is I earlier did lose a sata drive from a broken power connection, may have damaged the connection cables??? Motherboard is o.k.

2)WIPED-OUT both HDD's and fixed both mbr's for the drives. Ran wipe-drive afterwards on both HDD's.

This computer is CLEAN.

I even went as far as re-flashing the bios, clearing the cmos and started from scratch. Using my 200GB HDD as primary for windowsXP SP2, loaded all updates that was necessary for windowsXP, even sp3, WMP 11, DirectX 9.0, all my motherboard, sound, and video card drivers. Next, I re-installed VHS2DVD, not Creator 2010 that I bought for windows 7, lo and behold, it is working, and my picture preview is smooth, the way it should be :D I connected my usb device to a different usb port (the add on plate to computer has a firewire connection as well) so I ended up using the "enhanced port" not a "standard" port. This was a little tricky to decipher, but I played around with all 8 usb ports to see what they connected to and found 4 different usb controllers on my board! 3 standard, 1 enhanced, I do not know why it was built this way, but this is what I have.

So I do not know nor can I confirm if the problem was hardware related, but at least now it is functioning properly.

I am going to install windows 7 on my terrabyte HDD and install Creator 2010 on that drive, and hopefully I get the same results using Creator 2010. I will post later after I thoroughly confuse my poor computer with the addition of windows 7 on my TB HDD.
