How to create mix video and data Blu Ray disc?

Blu-Rey

Question

Back when I burned DVDs (and when you purchased pre-recorded movies etc) it was common to see options like, "place this DVD in your computer for more content". You would find webpages, or screen saver files etc.

Can that be done with Blu Ray?

The combos I thought of, do any of them work?

If I have a BD .ISO file can I write data files to the disc, leave it "open" then try to write my .iso file?

Can I write data to the disc, leave it open, then use MyDVD to render and burn the BD?

Can I burn the BD .ISO file then leave it open to write data then close?

Can I write data to the disc, then use MyDVD to write my movie to the BD as a "folder set"?

Can I simply write my data, then copy over a MyDVD "folder set" to the BD and it would work in a Blu Ray stand alone player?

The objective is to have a BD project that plays on a home stand alone Blu Ray player, then when inserted into a PC/Mac and browsed there is more data available (files, documents etc).

Thanks!

Rey

You mean it "should" work when burned in Roxio. It didn't with me. Update: both my data/vid disc and my vid disc return "invalid disc" when played in my friend's PS3.

The problem is with BD-REs I don't know which brands work/don't work so I don't want to buy more discs to find out. I know Memorex BD-RE doesn't work.

Even though my BD drive writes CD/DVD DL/DVD-RE/and data BD-DL just fine, is there a chance it would have a problem writing BD compatible with stand alone players? I would find that weird. I wish I could test the .ISO while it is in .ISO format. I have not found a way to successfully mount the .ISO and play it. It would make me feel better about the .ISO if I saw it work in ANY format before trying to burn.

ISO is the only way I burn mine...

But there is only One BD Movie format. (data is different)

Memorex is not worth the effort it takes to get through the wrapping! Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden are the only 'quality' brands made. I have had to revert to Sony RE and RE-DL due to local availability and had no problems. Got 30+ writes & erases on the 25 GB but only 2 on the 50GB.

I have not found a way to mount a BD ISO or get it to play.

I have the CinePlayer BD Player plug-in from Roxio and I can point it to a mts file in the Stream folder and it will play. But it wants the BDMV folder yet doesn't play it…

Well, I DLed a BluRay .ISO and tried Roxio and my other programs to mount it and play it. It didn't work either so I guess that is a good thing (in my case... as I can't use it as proof that my .iso is invalid).

It plays using Nero the same way my .ISO does.. no menus and no ability to skip chapters etc... Roxio's player won't play it due to "licensing issues" however it is a home movie, not commercial. Oh well. As long as the .iso I DLed behaves the same as my .ISO it gives me hope.

To Playback BDs you will need an extra Decoder for Roxio 2009 and Nero.

Funny, I woke up this morning and just remembered something, remember I mentioned,

"Safest - verify data written to disc after burning (slowest)", "Verify copied discs"

Is that also ignored with .iso? Because as you know, the last pure blu-ray (no data) .ISO I burned completed successfully with those settings but still didn't work.

UGH!!! I WISH I COULD FIGURE OUT HOW TO MOUNT A BLU-RAY .ISO before burning. I might try via finding another Blu-Ray .ISO out there on the internet. As I should have the right tools already, but it doesn't work (my .ISO is the only one I have to try it on).

Ah, that makes total sense...! So a new drive or media it is... It will be a while before I do either so please wish me luck.

Of course I wish you luck! :D Maximize your chances by having the PC doing nothing but burn and walking away when it is burning.

A recap: I am using Sony & Verbatim RE discs (3 of them) I have made 44 burns & erases + 2 data sessions on BD-R and no failures…

Now a few experiments did not work, when I was trying to burn Folder sets and make a BD Movie. But the burn was successful.

These have all been Version 2.1 discs and burn up to 2X. The BD-R is Version 1.2 and burns at 4X. (I have no idea what Version Number means in BD, but someone told me to check it :) )

Burner is an LG HL-DT-ST BH08LS20 I got on sale at Best Buy… I my friends managed to find one cheaper the day after I bought mine… It is not at the top of the pile, nor is it at the bottom. It was affordable and let me get my nose in the BD door.

(I had an advertisement a few years ago, taunting me with a BD Burner that "Breaks the $10,000 price barrier!!!" It was $9,999 + shipping… It was hard to pass up but I worked through the pain)

I have been a little distracted, but I have not been able to locate an ISO Editor which will do BD and allow adding Folders to it.

Can you show me a screen of your "Burn Disc Image" options? Maybe that is something.. I also noticed that I can not adjust the write speed. I would like to burn it at 1x but it will only burn at 2x.

Mine are (I didn't change anything):

Type: Track at Once (TAO) open

Mode: Mode 1

File System: ISO+Joliet (106 char file names)

I want to close the DVD

Safest - verify data written to disc after burning (slowest)

Verify copied discs

With that it was successful but the disc burned from MyDVD created .ISO didn't work.

Those settings are totally irrelevant!!!

The settings are SET when the ISO is created and cannot be overridden…

I never pay any attention to burn speed, everything I do is at full throttle

You have to get some RE and some good media.

So, you have never made an .ISO that never worked (MyDVD never created an invalid .ISO file)? That at least gives me hope that I will someday be able to get it to work by either buying another burner, trying another brand BD etc...

No, not what I said.

Every DVD Movie & Blu-ray I have made via ISO, worked when I used either Burn Disc Image from the Home app or Creator Classic to burn the disc!!!

I have never been able to burn a Folder Set to BD and have it work.

If you create an ISO for BD in MyDVD and there are no errors — it will work when burned in Roxio!

You should have ordered some BD-RE by now and had them delivered! I paid $13 for a 25 GB and 50 GB RE's can be had for $25…

I have done some testing and the only way you are going to get to add Data to a BD is to use an ISO and you will need an ISO Editing software to add the Data Folder…

Plan B: would be some burning software that can burn a compliant BD Movie Folder Set… I know of none!

I am going to look for an ISO editor today if I get a chance… I have ISO Buster but they tell me it will not allow me to edit! It is recovery software, and a good one at that.

I'm going to move the "can't get my .iso to work" discussion into a new thread..

http://forums.support.roxio.com/index.php?showtopic=59512

However the way this is working (or not working) both my combo data / video disc and my pure video disc are both failing the same way... which suggests perhaps that the combo disc idea works?

edit: well, I created a new thread but it was deleted by a moderator.. even if it was a different subject than creating a combo/data disc. I wanted to start a new thread since I can't even get my .iso by itself created with mydvd to work but I guess will continue the discussion here as they want.

Ok, this time I used a new disc, and re-rendered the .iso (created with MyDVD) and burned it with Roxio '09 "Burn Disc Image" and got a "successful burn" and had verify on but found that I wasted another $14+ and have another coaster. I am getting pretty sick of this. I don't trust that the .isos being made by MyDVD actually work. It reacts the EXACT same way the disc I burned and described before works. The player seems to try to play the disc, gets no error but only presents a black screen.

When I tried my combo video-data disc I mentioned earlier the Video won't play but I can access all the data files (and some of the video files play when I use Win Explorer) so I know my drive is working.

When I try "DVD Play" that came with the computer it plays "real" BDs just fine.

Nero Showtime 4 presents a black screen and plays 32 seconds black then resets.. it gets no errors just shows a black screen and knows there are 22 titles but I can't perform anything but play 30 seconds of blackness. I can't do anything else. It also reacts the exact same with both discs.

Maybe my .iso mounting program does really work and the .iso is un-playable.

WTF

No, it still does not play. Unfortunately since I can't get a RE to work (or I don't plan on buying a bunch of different brands until I find one that does)...

For future generations let it be known that 1.5-2yrs ago I got an HP that came with ggw-h20L drive. Apparently LG has a patch to allow the use of Memorex BD-RE discs. It does NOT work however if you got the drive from HP (ugh!!!). HP has no patch... so I am stuck unless I try other brands and hope it works. So far I see that Panasonic BD-DL do work (for data anyway).

... all I can do is buy another $14 BD-RL and write the .ISO again like I normally would have (do it all within Roxio)... closing the disc with the .iso write and never adding data. That blows but I will try it in the next few days after I pick up another disc.

Edit: I really wish I could mount the .iso to test if it even works. I have found enough quirks with Roxio already so I'm not trusting it at the moment. I used BDDecryptor to mount the .iso but it also does not play. Is there a chance that Roxio is creating faulty .iso files even if it successfully completes?

I got sidetracked… Had a similar tact in mind and have a question out on that.

Not going to work as a Data Disc, BD Movie is a different format.

Still hoping for a solution.

My theory (obviously wrong) was that if I wrote the .ISO 1st, it would make it "BD Movie format".. except I was leaving it open to add more data, then planned to close it all when done. All the data made it there and works.. just won't play when I try to watch it in a BD player (on my computer at least, I don't have a stand alone).

My BR-RE is not working (Memorex) so I tried Panasonic BR-DL. My .ISO FINALLY was successfully created after 17hrs. I used Nero 8 to burn the .ISO and left the session open. I then "continued multisession" to write the data files I also want on the disc and it failed. So I went to windows and simply copied the files on the disc... successfully. It will not play the video. I am now trying to find a way to close the disc as Nero 8 will no longer write to (and close) the disc.

I loaded ImgBurn, it shows status of the disc as incomplete (I assume that means it is still an open session disc).

I am assuming it would never play in a blu-ray player until it is closed.

I try to close it using ImgBurn and it says incompatible format.

I can view all the dirs/files in Windows explorer, but it will not play the movie using Blu-Ray players... if I click around I can play the files individually so it is not a read error. I am guessing it is because it is still an open multisession disc. How can I get it closed?

Interesting, I did a refresh in ImgBurn and now it shows status "complete"...

Disc Information:

Status: Complete

Erasable: No

Sessions: 3

TOC Information:

Session 1... (LBA: 0)

-> Track 01 (Mode 1, LBA: 0 - 17888959)

Session 2... (LBA: 21778831)

-> Track 02 (Mode 1, LBA: 17888960 - 21767430)

-> LeadOut (LBA: 21767431)

BD Disc Information:

Disc ID: MEI-T01-01

Disc Type: BD-R

Basically NO but there is a way. Here is what I have found to date…

Burning a BD Folder doesn't work! Nothing in Roxio will write the folders to a BD disc and produce a compliant BD Movie! :(

The only thing I can get to work, besides direct render/burn, is ISO and burn the ISO only with Roxio's Burn Disc Image program.

Now… other ISO burners will burn and some allow for adding files and folders to an existing ISO

So I would suspect ImgBurn would have that ability. In fact it might even work better with a BD Folder set as well as your data set???

Why don't you give it a try and report back on it??? :DFree

And if any one else has any good ideas on this – chime in!!!

I know Roxio has only slapped a band-aid offering in the BD area, essentially letting us make DVD Movie menus in BD. They have not even touched the menu structure you see on commercial BD movies…

I also think that some commercial BD Movie menus are complete overkill… :o

I would hope for something to be available to the unwashed masses like me and a Pro Grade product like DVDit "BDit Pro" available.
