Burner testing

Traddyman

Question

Hi there,

I was wondering if GrandpaBruce, Brendon. Jim(Hardin) or Cd can help with this one,

Is there any software freely available to test the functionality of My Nec ND3520AW Burner?

I have just Upgraded to Creator 2010 from EMC10 where I had a problem develop that Jim managed to sort!

Many suggestions followed regarding media.....So got hold of some Verbatim DVD+RW that were recorded on!

They erased, (Having made an image) fine!- Look like Blank discs! However when trying to burn any files to them, The programme suite says that the task completed successfully....But the disc remains blank! or if I use the media I already had, does not even start, (Most of the time!) but sometimes will start to burn then crash! (The recording-not Creator 2010!)

Thanks cd !

Mine does not autoselect the media....... ie lists a cd when a verbatim DVD-R is inserted and I have to manually change to DVD 4.7 is this the norm ?

Troy

Hi cd,

No program not closed between tests other than window autoclosing on successful Test Only burn!

I was asking if it could be an issue at all? As I have not completed a successful 'Burn' to DVD yet using creator 2010 and from threads that I have read believe that they are compatible side-by-side?

Just wondering.... as trying to rule out options before Buying a New DVD/RW Burner!

Thanks for any help,

Regards,

Troy

Just tried again, (Failed!) Says

D:_NECDVD_RW ND3520AW ("Program memory area update failure - Medium Error." [03/73/04])

does this mean anything to anyone?

Cheers,

Troy

1. No it doesn't, you can leave it sent on CD in the CC screen, click on burn with a DVD-R inserted in the drive and it will say next to the drive 1 DVD -R needed...

2. Close the program between tests, that's half your problem including the memory error..

3. Make your DVD-Video Image file and use ImgBurn to test (ImgBurn tests too) or burn, see how that goes.

If ImgBurn burns a successful DVD it's not your burner..

Many thanks cd,

tried with ImgBurn to copy a disc image.....................

In test mode It completes!

Uncheck test box........

It Fails!!

Faulty Burner?

Troy

I hope this helps Traddyman... :)

TRADDYMAN, you will see the 'Test Only & Test then Write' option for CD-R media, DVD-R, and DVD-R-DL media.

DVD+R, DVD+R-DL, DVD +RW, and DVD-RW, you will only see the 'Write Only' option..

Did you ever close the program in between tests?

Are you asking if having EMC 10 and ImgBurn installed affect the tests?

Hi Chaps,

Running in Test only......... Completes 100%

Running in Test then Write.........Crashes at 85 % says Memory Error

Running in Write Only........Does Not Start! says .....Disc Error - Using Verbatim DVD-R

PS Should I remove My EMC 10 ( Will it affect?) same goes For ImgBurn ?

Cheers,

Troy

Here's mine in Windows7, 32 bit.

My DW1640 will 'test only', so it isn't a drive thing.

This isn't helping Traddyman, though. TRADDYMAN can you do the 'test only' thing in your system?

Hi Brendon,

Mine shows 3 options.....Write only, Test Only, Test then Write. in that order but Drop-down.....

But I'm Using Vista Home Premium not Windows7

Test mode is not normally supported by DVD + R media so Roxio software doesn't allow for it.

TRADDYMAN, you will see the 'Test Only & Test then Write' option for CD-R media, DVD-R, and DVD-R-DL media.

DVD+R, DVD+R-DL, DVD +RW, and DVD-RW, you will only see the 'Write Only' option..

Yes, under the General Options like this:

I don't know why yours does not show that option???

BTW, you have any other testing utilities up your sleeve ;)

I followed your test (DVD Media inserted)..

Slap a bunch of files into a project to fill a DVD.

Your showing a CD, I doubt that would make a difference?

I loaded it up as a CD with no media inserted like you Jim...

Could we of found a bug or difference in W-7 Pro x64?

Cheers Jim,

I think My Burner may well be malfunctioning though! Plays DVD A1, Burns and plays Cdr etc Can See dif types of media just seems to fail Burning DVD

Not a lot of testing utilities available in Roxio…

You might try Creator Classic.

Slap a bunch of files into a project to fill a DVD.

Select Burn but set the Burn Options to Test Only.

When you click on Burn, make sure the Burner is actually selected with a Checkmark by it! It is easy to miss

In this shot, the Burner is not selected! Only a an ISO will be made.

Another check – from the Home app click on Data/Copy and Burn Data Disc. It is a simple app, use Explorer to drag a file or 2 onto the blank page and click burn…

And of course in the Home app, Tools – Get Disc Information. This will tell you about your drive and its' media (if present).

cd is great on utilities and may have one or 2 up his sleeve :D
