widescreen and dv camera

mikemoke2000

Question

Hello, I own a sony DV DCR-HC42 widescreen and I have recorded my family videos in widescreen mode. I don't have a widescreen TV but when I'm playing directly from the camera to the TV I can watch 16:9 videos as old 16:9 movies on normal TV. However when I record videos on DVD with EMC 8, even after selecting 16:9 mode in EMC settings, videos results strecht. How can I fix this. THX

The DCR-HC42 is a minDV tape camcorder. Please use firewire and capture as DV AVI ONLY. Capturing as MPEG2 loses the 16:9 flag that tells Videowave it is widescreen. DO NOT use the included USB cable for capturing. You will get lower resolution.

thank you for your help. Indeed, I'm already using firewire 1394 because I have experienced some problems in the past. As you told me I have to use AVI files but my dvd players doesn't support avi, is there is a possibility to retransform after to MPEG 2 and to keep 16:9 format. Thx

That's what MyDVD is for. Just add the DV AVI file to MyDVD project and it will convert to 16:9 MPEG 2. For some reason, capturing directly from firewire to MPEG 2 loses the 16:9 flag needed.

Capture your footage in DV AVI 16:9

Run MyDVD

You can use either 4:3 or 16:9 menus

Add your DV AVI file

Edit the menu

Then Burn to disc, ISO or video folder

MyDVD will indeed keep the 16:9 this way.
