No recognizable disk in drive

Nicole0716

Question

I have installed both a dvd-rw and a dvd-r drive in my system and both give me the message "no recognizable disk in drive". I check to make sure the drive is working and it is. What could be causing this problem?? Assistance would be greatly appreciated. I've also updated drivers and made sure the latest firmware is installed. There aren't any yellow exclamation marks in the device manager either. Is it possible I can only use DVD+RW or DVD+R???

ok, contated hp for support and they said I should buy sony or fuji disks. Bought sony and that still did not solve problem. Contacted hp again and they said I needed to upload nero. In order to burn/rip dvd's they require a purchase, which I cannot do financially. They said by uploading this I need to convert the file into mpeg2 file, not a data file. Nero did nothing since I did not purchase. Went back into Roxio and selected capture video, which may have worked in getting the item from vhs to dvd, however the dvd will only play on my computer, not on the dvd in the living room, where we will watch these movies. On the capture video screen the capture settings selected was dvd-sp and under that it said 352x480 mpeg2, 4mbps.

Can anyone suggest why this won't play in the "normal" dvd player? Is it a format issue?? I feel like I'm going the long way to get the videos, but it is working (somewhat), so I can't argue with success (I guess). Sorry trying to be optimistic, but this is very frustrating - especially when I thought I would download software, plug in and be ready to go.

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide.

I looked at the box containing the Roxio Easy VHS to DVD and the copyright that is printed on the disk is 2008, which I did not realize. My home menu reads as follows:

Tools, eject/close drive tray, create labels, options, cd lookup, advanced, music/audio, create audio cd, quick find. Perhaps this is why I cannot see a get disk information option??

In any event, I can get the items from vhs tape onto a sony dvd-r disk and they will play back in the computers drive, however will not play back in the normal dvd player. The normal dvd player is older, but I have a portable dvd that I just received and it won't work there either. How can I get this to work?

As far as names of programs, I use windows xp media center edition. The burner is an HP740.

I guess I don't understand what imgburn is supposed to do??

Sorry, the VHS2DVD version you have does not give the option "Get Disc Information"

On what page are you looking?

If you have the full retail Roxio Creator 2009 then in the C2009 Home page in the Tools drop-down menu there should be the `Get Disc Information`option. If its not there then what software are you using?

Can you explain step-by-step exactly what you are doing? Be sure to give the correct names of programs, etc.

I don`t understand what you are doing here.

You don`t use ImgBurn to upload video or photos. Upload means moving files from your computer over the internet to a website.

I went onto tools and there is not anything that says get disk info. It mentions about cd audio info on where i could get tracks of songs, etc. but nothing on here indicates video.

no, I tried image burn and it would not upload video, pictures. At the bottom of the screen, it stated device not ready, medium not present.

Why do you want advice when you won't follow the advice given?

Tell us what the Get Disk Information says from Creator 2009 about your DVD that plays in your PC but not in your DVD player.

Launch Creator 2009

Insert your DVD

Go to Tools at the top of the Creator 2009 window

Click on Get Disk Information

1. Tell us about your DVD hardware

2. Tell us what the lower window indicates about your inserted DVD media

A +/- on the drive should be able to handle both, but I repeat - the HP 740b has a LOT of problems from any reports I've seen, including failing to write on DVD-R

Check the website I gave to see for yourself

Hi, I had this same problem with my computer when I tried using Roxio to burn to a dvd disc, And I found out that I had the wrong kind of Dvd discs. I needed DVD+r or DVD+rw to run mine , not DVD-. Check your computer to make sure what one it takes.

I did not know there was + and - DVD. I never tried to use them before I got the Roxio program. LOL!

On the front of my computer it says lightscribe dvd + with a minus right below the plus symbol. Does this possibly mean either type of dvd disc could be used?? I hate to end up with another stack of discs that can't be used.

I hope this is the right answer. The make and model of my dvd drives are:

1) HP DVD writer 740b

2) TSSTcorp DVD-ROM TS-H352C

If this is not the right information, where would I find the make and model of drives?? It's an HP Pavilion a1245C computer.

I put in a Memorex DVD-R disc in the drive and also tried a Maxel DVD-RW disc in either of the drives.

I received the error message on the roxio software. I followed instructions in manual stating to chose dvd drive from drop down menu and underneath the drive it gave me the error message that "no recognizable disk in drive". This happened with both discs and both drives. I checked the drives and it indicated they're working fine.

Could it be brand name of discs or that I need a DVD+R or DVD+RW???

Dave - from any reports I've seen so far, the problem is the drive itself - there are LOTS of complaints when you google for it

I am able to play burned music cds in here without a problem (thru windows media player). I updated firmware and checked again and the drive says the d drive is functioning properly. Could a good cleaning be what's needed? I'll try imageburn next.

You might also want to tell us what you're actually putting in the drive, and which application is giving you the error message, please.
