encoding preview

Question

When i burn a project to a dvd there is the encoding preview box. Sometimes the box is gray with white circles (default i suppose), and sometimes the project fast forwards in the box. what is supposed to happen in that window? I ask because when the default window is there during a burn, dvd looks fine. But when the project fast forwards in the window, the dvd is not so good. ???

When you have the grey window it means that the program does not need to render the video and can be used as is. If you have video showing it means that rendering is taking place - its not really fast-forwarding.

I don't know what you mean by "the dvd is not so good"? Either the DVD is OK or it is not OK.

For the distortion with movement, try setting to Software Render – Tools – Options – Render.

You can get there in either VideoWave or MyDVD.

Thank you, that did work this time. I have tried that in the past with no luck. I had to reistall vista last week due to a clean install of roxio that somehow hosed everything. Now the software rendering works. Does that mean the video card cant handle it? The sony hi8 tapes i leave on hardware with no trouble but the vhs tapes is where i'm having issues now. Any info appreciated.

The dvd is not ok when rendering is taking place. It has distorted lines when there is movement in the picture. When there is no rendering the dvd is just fine. ???

That seems to indicate some problems with your system, mainly your video card. What are your system specs, especially video card?

You can also try switching to the render mode from its current setting. Look under Tools/Options and select the other mode.

If software rendering works and hardware doesn't that means you video card or graphics adaptor is not good enough for hardware rendering.

Whether your captured video comes from Sony Hi8 tapes or VHS tapes makes no differenceto your software/hardware setting. I am assuming that both sources are analog tapes.

specs are dell studio xps-vista home premium 64 Bit-8g ram-ati radeon HD 4670 512MB video card. the driver is up to date. This only seems to happen on certain videos and then works great on the next. I am new to roxio and to computers for that matter and am not sure why some videos need to render and others do not. I am transfering from vhs and sony hi 8 tapes.

Yes, both are analog i believe. I don't understand why some work with one and not the other? Right now all of the vhs captures i have to render with software and the hi8 tapes work with hardware? I thought the video card i have was sufficient but maybe not.

How are you capturing the video from your VHS and Sony hi 8 tapes (is the Sony video alsoVHS format?) To what format are you capturing? If to mpeg2 the it may alsready be DVD complient and does not need to be rendered while for DV avi it has to be rendered to mpeg2 for a DVD.

Can you tell which type of video is giving you problems?

I am capturing with roxio usb device. I am using default settings and get avi file. I use the s-video from the sony cam and composite video from vhs player. I have had both good and bad dvd's from both captures.
