PROBLEM REINSTALLING CREATOR 2010, ERROR CODE R6034 FROM VISUAL C++ RUNTIME LIBRARY.

Question

Not sure if this should be a new thread or not. If so, my suggested title for this problem is: PROBLEM REINSTALLING CREATOR 2010, ERROR CODE R6034 FROM VISUAL C++ RUNTIME LIBRARY.

My Machine Environment: Dell XPS desktop running Win XP Home SP3, fully updated and current according to the Windows Update site. 2GB memory. Memorex DVD16+/0-DL4RWID2 burner.

I successfully installed Creator 2010 several months ago, and used the program to create a DVD movie using Videowave and MyDVD. However, the program was using excessive run-time resources even when not running. Specifially, VXBlockserve.exe was consumming about 25% of my cpu. [that is not the subject of this post. It is, however, the reason I tried the full uninstall / reinstall below.]

I followed the procedure "Preparing your computer for installing Roxio Products". There were no problems. At least I got the latest firmware and drivers for my burner and videocard. I had not done this for my first install of Creator 2010 and I thought that omission might be the source of my excessive cpu utilization.

Next, I followed the procedure "Complete Uninstall of Creator 2009 and 2010 (Windows XP)" [http://kb.roxio.com/search.aspx?URL=/content/kb/WinOnCD/000206CR&PARAMS=set-locale=en].

The uninstall step (step 1) for Creator 2010 using Add/Remove failed with a Visual C++ Runtime Error (R6034) "An application has made an attempt to load the C runtime library incorrectly...". So, I used the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility package (step 2) to remove Creator 2010 and all Roxio and Sonic software. I followed all other steps of the "Complete Uninstall ..." procedure, completing steps 1-8. I restarted the computer as per step 8. I did NOT enable the Startup Applications that were disabled in step 3 of the "Complete Uninstall ..." procedure.

NOTE: I also ensured my McAfee Internet Security Suite was not loaded by disabling all McAfee services using MSCONFIG before trying to reinstall Creator 2010, below.

I started the clean install of Creator 2010 from the product CD (disk 1). Almost immediately, the installer gave the following error:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Runtime Error!

R6034

An application has made an attempt to load the C runtime library incorrectly.

This is where things now stand. I could use some help in deciding what to do next.

Did you do any registry editing that was NOT in the clean install instructions?

Can you go back and use the Windows Restore function to get back to where your were?

Do you have a lot of video/image/audio files on your computer? The high CPU use could have been from Media Manager trying to catalog all those files. The use will drop to almost zero once they are catalogged or until you turn off the function in Media Manager.

Try this:

1) Download and run Revo Uninstaller in the moderate more. See if you can see any Roxio or Sonic applications, if so, remove them It will use the built in uninstaller and then check the registry for items that can be uninstallled safely. If that works, try re-installing the software.

2) If you can't find any, create a new administrator account and install the software from there. Are you installing from a disc or from a download file?

Thank you for your suggestions and sorry for the delay in my response. I believe I have solved my problem.

I did try Revo Uninstaller, but only after I had before used Add/Remove, so Revo could not find anything to remove. I did go manually into REGEDIT and remove references to ROXIO and to SONIC, first backing up the Registry. I once again went through the detailed "Prepare Your Computer for Install" instructions step-by-step. What differed this time is that I had recently removed McAfee Security Suite and installed the Norton 360 Security Suite. I disabled Norton 360 prior to my third installation attempt. Upon running the Creator 2010 Installer, I once again received the runtime error message "R6034" from the Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library. I clicked "OK". I received the same runtime error message again, and clicked "OK". Next, however, the installation started. It had not done this before. The installation went through to completion, and Creator 2010 appears to be working correctly.

What was the difference? I will never know. My second install attemp failed, even though I went through the detailed "Prepare Your PC" procedure and the detailed "Installation" procedure which included turning off all non-system startup apps. Yes, I am now running Norton 360 Security Suite and not McAfee. It would be nice to blame McAfee, but also included in between were several Critical Updates by Windows Update. Speculation at this point is not fruitful.

I REQUEST THIS THREAD BE CLOSED. Thanks again for your help. :)
