Converting wmv files to avi, or whatever on a Mac

For some reason, my Mac won't play any of the WMV files I receive. When I try to play them, they open corrupted. I had Prism, (subscripton just ran out) and this seemed to work only "OK." They guy at the store told me Popcorn would do the trick, and I only needed to buy this package and it would do the converting. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but every time I try to convert a WMV file, it says "Unsupported File."
