Photo Suite changes to EXIF data

Question

Why does Photo Suite change the EXIF data? I can agree that it should overwrite the Software field and the ModifyDate field, and many of the other fields don't really matter, but DateTimeOriginal AND CreateDate? This does not make sense to me. Further complicating the mystery, Photo Suite doesn't always change the dates!

Is there something I'm overlooking? I keep my photos organzed by date taken, so unless there is a fix for this, I can't use Photo Suite for editing.

Can any one tell me if Creator 2010 also exhibits this behavior of overwriting the EXIF fields, especially the DateTimeOriginal and CreateDate? Every other program I have looked at leaves most of the EXIF alone. If it handles EXIF data correctly, I will certainly consider upgrading from Creator 2009. I like the editing features of PhotoSuite.

Again, if I am missing or misunderstanding something, please tell me that as well.

Thanks

Stan

I am not in front of PC with the software but try to disable Roxwatch. It monitors multimedia files. Refer to this post on how to disable that program.

Let us know if that resolves the issue.

You must be overwriting the original photos if the DateTaken gets changed in the EXIF data. It seems that Photosuite considers your edited/cropped photo as a "newly" taken photo and changes the DateTaken date.

Creator 2010 also changes the DateTaken date.

I see this thread has not been updated for a while so I'm sure you'll all be glad to hear that despite your concerns, Roxio Creator PRO 2012 has NOT remedied the EXIF data deletion..... or the date changing, in fact we've all been ignored.

I sent the following;

Description:

Editing photos results in the original EXIF data, including the original time & date being overwritten. Why? The option to keep the original date is essential, not only for filing purposes but for the very basic method of producing a list of photos in date order. Even Freeware editing software gives this option, in fact it's usually the default setting. Please tell me this can be rectified.

I get back;

Thank you for contacting Corel Customer Support. May I know what component of Creator 2012 Pro you are using to edit your pictures, and what kind of edits do you do on those pictures? Also, do you save the pictures from one image format to another, or do you save them to the same format as the originals? Please do not hesitate to contact us with any further questions. Regards, Antonio Corel Customer Support

I reply;

Hi Antonio,

with regard to your reply to my query I was using the Edit Photo component of Roxio Creator 2012 Pro to straighten horizons and occasionally adjust the contrast.

They were then saved in the original format as .jpg into another folder.

This resulted in not only the original date being overwritten but also all of the EXIF data containing the camera details and exposure settings etc. being lost.

I'm attaching two examples of the same photo as an example.

P1060002.JPG is the original and P1060002a.JPG is the result having had the horizon levelled in Roxio.

They have been shrunk for ease of sending.

Please compare the EXIF data of each and you'll see what I and others have been complaining about.

I get back;

Thank you for getting back to us.

When you make certain changes to the photo (e.g. straightening, cropping), the software treats this as a different file, which is why the EXIF data is not carried over when you save it. Other software, like PaintShop Pro provides the user with an option to save the EXIF data, but PhotoSuite does not support this function.

Please do not hesitate to contact us with any further questions.

Antonio

Corel Customer Support Services (This is Customer Support?? I know what it bl**dy well does, I want a solution!)

I reply;

Well it's a shame this little gem is not clearly stated in the advertising because I for one would certainly not have purchased this Software had I been aware that such a basic requirement, available even in FREEWARE editing programs, was not even an option.

Surly this can be fixed with a patch and implemented in future versions, not that many of us can afford to keep "upgrading".

This omission alone has put me off future purchases.

I will in future use IrfanView to tidy stuff up.

As far as photo editing goes, Don't be fooled by the Roxio "PRO" label
