again, really appreciate your responses. I have tried opening imovie first, but no go. what I am doing now is sending it to the quick time player then dragging it into imovie. it is an extra step, but seems to be working. don't know what is up with imovie not opening though.

You should be able to send it to iMovie from the window that appears at the completion of recording. This initiates a conversion to the format readable by iMovie. The MPEG 2 video recorded can not be imported to iMovie without conversion. If you have the full version of Toast or you have Popcorn you can do the conversion at a later time. Otherwise it needs to be done at the completion of the capture using the provided link.

Let me know if this helps clear things up for you or if you have more questions and issues.

I had the same problem with iMovie not opening up. I am using iMovie 06 which is not suppose to work anyway. My work around was as follows: I selected the edit in iMovie option and after a long conversion time the message was, iMovie cannot be found. I then opened up iMovie, create a new movie and imported the .mov into iMovie (might have to look for that file, it is not in the same location as the .mpg file.) After a 2 hour transfer (the length of the video) iMovie gets hung up during the last minute of transfer. Then I choose force quit iMovie. Reopen iMovie. It opens as the new project I just recently created. There is a message regarding viewing the trash. I do so. I see my entire movie in the iMovie trash. I then drag it out of the trash into the clip pane and voila ... I can then edit and add chapter markers. There is one glitch though .... I can't put anything in the trash while I'm making the movie. I have to simply drag the discarded sections to a different clip frame and not add it to my movie. So complicated, but I much prefer iMovie 06 to the newer versions and am willing to do the long work around.

thanks for the reply. At the end of the recording it has the option to send to imovie, but when I do so, the time line bar comes up that shows it is trying to send and at the end a message pops up that the application cannot be opened. The error message actually says that "the application imovie cannot be found". So, I am guessing the decoding is not happening or it is hapening but when done something is throwing it off from being opened. How can I get the program to "find" imovie? What does Toast do and can that help with the problem I am having?

I understand now but just like you i'm puzzled about it. Try opening iMovie before clicking the export to iMovie button. I had to do that the first time because for me when the conversion (which takes some time) completed nothing happened. Opening iMovie first fixed that. I presume you haven't put the iMovie application anywhere but where Apple put it.

The full version of Toast has converters to change the MPEG 2 video to a variety of different formats including the h.264 and DV formats used in iMovie. The advantage is you can do the conversion at a time that's convenient for you rather that at the completion of the recording.

Your Toast 9 Basic can do trimming of the MPEG 2 video and make a video DVD without any re-encoding. You can choose to do this later by dragging in the .mpeg video file to Toast's Video window with DVD video selected as the format. Clicking the Edit button (you may need to click edit again when in the edit window) launches the Toast Video Player which also is an editor for marking and deleting segments you don't want in the video DVD.

How do you do the conversion within Toast?

If you have the full version of Toast there is a Convert window for this. The icons at the top of Toast from left to right are for Data, Audio, Video, Copy and Convert. Click Convert and choose Video Files. Add the .mpg video to the Toast window. Click the red button to choose your export option.

If you choose any of the export options that create a MPEG 4 or H.264 video Toast adds a text track to the export which makes it unrecognized by iMovie. To remove the text track you need to either use QuickTime 7 Pro or use MPEG Streamclip. The way to do it with MPEG Streamclip is to open the video and then choose Save As... to make a new copy. The new copy is minus the text track so it will be recognized for import by iMovie.
