Burning worked before, not working now

CD_NM

Question

Hope this is not too verbose, but I will try to include everything I can remember about the problem.

Running Window XP Home SP3, Roxio Creator 2010 SP2 with latest PX engine

2 burners installed, LiteOn DH-20A4P (PATA) and Asus DRW-24B1ST (SATA) - both drives have latest firmware and DMA is enabled.

Tried 2 different media, Memorex DVD+R DL 8X, Verbatim DVD+R DL 8X

Burning .ifo, .bup & .vob (DVD video) from hard drive to disc using "Burn Data Disc". I had successfully burned around 20 of the Memorex discs in the LiteOn burner, then it just quit burning. Interestingly, I can still burn TDK -R & TDK +R single layer, just not +R DL. It was a good excuse to buy a new burner, so I bought & installed the Asus. Before the purchase, I read quite a few reviews and it seems like most folks have good luck with Verbatim media and the Asus burner, so I bought the Verbatim media also. I have tried both media in both burners but still no luck burning +R DL. Also tried incrementally lowering the burn speed all the way down to 2X - no luck.

That was about everything I could think of with hardware so I started looking at possible software issues. I tried to use "Burn Data Disc - Advanced" but it refused to even try, since it was a video file directory. I had been running the original Creator software (no updates) so I put in the install disc and ran a repair on the installation. It burned one disc then failed again. Tried installing Creator SP2 and the latest PX engine. Still no luck. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling with the SP2 and PX engine upgrades. Still no luck.

Symptom - I launch the burn application and pull in the desired files. Insert the disc and wait until it is recognized, the app recognizes it as Disc Type: DVD+R DL, Blank Media. Click the burn button and after a few seconds get the message "There was a problem writing to the disc. You can try again by clicking the retry button. You will need another blank disc ready."

Status is:

Sense:00 ASC:00 ASCQ:00 (Command 00)

Px.dll: 4.18.16.0

PxAFS.DLL: 4.18.16.0

pxdrv.dll: 1.02.47a

PxMas.dll: 4.18.16.0

PxSFS.DLL: 4.18.16.0

PxWave.dll: 4.18.16.0

pxwma.dll: 1, 0, 0, 3

If anyone can shed some light on this, it would be greatly appreciated.

TIA, Charlie

It could be the media - Memorex is down at the bottom of the list for video work - try Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden if you van

Did not have time to do anything yesterday.

Tried the Verbatim +R DL 8X media. Did not work in the LiteOn or the Asus.

Downloaded the latest version of aspi from the Adaptec site and installed it. Long shot, but something to try.

No change after installing the aspi.

Still the same problem with any combination of LiteOn drive, Asus drive, Memorex media or Verbatim media. Cannot burn video (DVD) files using "Burn Data Disc", but can create an iso of the same files and burn the iso using "Burn Disc Image". The iso burn will work using the same disc that failed the data disc write.

Just as an FYI, the iso I burned was the last Memorex on hand. Working only with Verbatim now.

Tried another experiment tonight. I scaled up a bunch of bmp files until they were very close to the same size as the vob files that I have been trying to burn. Created a temp directory with the bmp files and copies of the ifo & bup files from the video directory. The final size of the temp directory was slightly larger than the video file directory, but the temp had no video files in it. "Burn Data Disc" burned the temp directory with no problem. For some reason, "Burn Data Disc" has decided that it does not like video files. It would burn video before, but not now.

That code seems to indicate something amiss between the drive and the OS -- double check the connections (even maybe try a new ribbon cable in the case of an IDE drive)

0 / 00 / 00 NO ADDITIONAL SENSE INFORMATION

Also check for anything else which may be running and attempting to access the drive

While trying to get the problem resolved I don't have any other apps running, only Creator.

Right now, the LiteOn is the only thing installed on the secondary IDE bus. As an experiment, I pulled power from the drive and disconnected the IDE cable from the motherboard. The Asus drive is SATA, so it is the only burner connected now. Brand new drive and cables. Still no luck.

Also, since my original post, I made sure that DirectX 9c is installed.

Think I am going to hit the sack, I need to get up in a couple of hours to go to work. Will check back this evening.

Thanks,

Charlie

Hey Charlie -

If you haven't already, go through the article Resolving General Burning Issues.

I think of importance for you would be steps 3, 6, and 7 - but try them all and respond once you have completed the list and given your burn another shot.

Hope it helps,

Jon

I read through the posts and maybe because I'm tired I don't see a solution to the Sense error code that CD_NM posted March 2010? I have a pioneer DVR-A18MBK that was working and then stopped burning and came up with that same error code. Sent it back three times to Pioneer and they finally replaced it. Installed the brand new drive tonight and still get the same error code, with all the PX etc.dll's listed. Also installed in the computer is a DVD-ROM CD burner, both connected with 80-wire cable and selector switches set to cable select. Computer is a build your own and thinks it has a SCSI CD drive installed as well as the other two drives. When anything is attached to the SCSI port both CD & DVD drives don't work well. (Besides the point maybe?) Anyway, using Sony -R DVD's that burn just fine with ROXIO in the other computer (laptop). I know TMI. Any suggestions? TXS.

Ok. I have the same issue.

I have not burned a DVD in a week or so.

But today - no dice.

Sense: 00 ASC: 00 ASCQ: 00 (Command 00).

Tried 5 different brands of DVD.

The drive seems to work fine with other stuff.

Just won't do a Burn Data Disk.

Tried several speeds and other options.

I have changed NOTHING. I have installed NOTHING. Except Microsoft probably snuck in and installed updates like they usually do.

What is going on?

Manufacturer & Model: HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GH40F

Firmware Revision MG01

Inserted disk:

DVD+R, Blank Media

# of tracks = 0

Free Space 4482.6MB

Used Space = 0

Amongst others tried Windata 16X DVDs and Verbatim 16X and Memorex 16X

Roxio Creator 2010 Pro

Version 1.2.193 SP2; 5.0.0.0

Build: 121B93A, R04; 500B22A, R04

PX Engine Wrapper 5.00.12a

PX Engine 4.18.16a, 47

BTW, I am running Win7 Pro 64, completely updated to current.

Machine is Intel Q8200, 4GB Ram, Gateway SX2800

>>>> Aha - definitely a Roxio bug.

After reading that someone else was able to do an image, I tried burning a CD image of an ISO I happened to have.

Worked fine.

Next I tried, just for grins, dragging the files and dropping them on the silly DVD icon that Roxio puts on the desktop.

Ok - SAME FILES - I USED THE SAME DISK that Roxio DATA failed on - it BURNED FINE on the Icon.

And the DVD is fine.

So the problem is with ROXIO DATA DISC module. It is BROKE!

Last word on this tonight ... repeated (scientific method, you know ...)

Took another disk.

Roxio Data Disk FAILS.

Pushed the disk back in.

Dragged the files to the icon.

Worked fine.

Unfortunately the "icon" does not have the options available with the Burn Data disk. Like easier editing of the list to burn, etc.

A few days later ...

I am just trying to burn a hand full of file 60MB onto a CD-R.

SAME PROBLEM.

Roxio Data Disk gets the SAME error - but leaving the same CD in the drive, I drag the files to the BURN ICON and it works.

Of course I have lost 80% of the features that I paid for if all I can use is the Burn ICON.

With reference to above, thanks for the suggestions. I had done all but #3 and #7 already.

#3 - bought the Asus drive OEM so there was no paperwork with it. Have not had any luck finding a recommended media list. I left a request for the list at the Asus forum, but they don't seem to be very responsive. Anyway, I had burned 18 of the Memorex DLs in the LiteOn drive using "Burn Data Disc" before the problem occurred.

#7 - Tried reinstalling the drivers for both drives. No difference, still would not burn.

Decided to try another experiment. I tried to burn a disc in the LiteOn using "Burn Data Disc", but as described before it did not work. Used "Copy and Convert" and created an iso from the files on the hard drive. Put the disc that had just failed into the drive and tried the iso file. "Burn Disc Image" did the iso burn with no problems. A little on the slow side, but it worked. Repeated the tests with the Asus drive and got the same results.

"Burn Disc Image" reported the iso as 7.4GB. "Burn Data Disc" reports that the files leave 390MB free space, so the size would be around 8.1GB. I thought that maybe it was a size issue, so I pulled a 500MB file out of the project to reduce the size and tried again. Another failure, so I guess it is not size related.

Now I am really baffled. I can burn an iso with "Burn Disc Image" but for some reason, after burning 18 discs, "Burn Data Disc" has decided that it no longer wants to burn video files.

Calling it a day. Thanks to all.
