Question regarding discs

biglar

Question

I own four tabletop DVD recorders - 2 Sonys and 2 Philips. I also used the Sonic software that came with my HP computer for 3 years to burn DVDs. No matter what brands of discs I've used (TDK, Staples, HP, Memorex, Sony, etc.) in any of the tabletop players or with the Sonic software I never had a problem burning discs. I've now upgraded to Creator 2010 and have found (and also been told in these forums), that the software is sensitive to "off-brand" discs. Why would the program have a problem with these discs? Obviously, the problem is software, not hardware.

Is that the Memorex story that's been repeated over and over?

You are distorting good advice…

The software could care less if you have a Taiyo Yuden disc in your burner or a slice of bologna!

The software says – hey Burner, Burn This…

It does not say – if you have a Staples disc, throw an error!

Many of us started burning back when a 2X CD was Hot! We have found and other sites have devoted much time and effort to actually testing and the results are the same - the brands you mentioned always turn in spotty results!

If things suddenly changed at your place, it ain't the software… ;)

I believe you've misread or misinterpreted what's been said. For those that have had problems, one good place to start is by trying a different (often "better") brand of disc. The program doesn't look at the discs, it talks to the drive, the drive reports how well it's doing. If it has no problem burning to a disc, great, but if that same disc isn't read well in another player, then there's a problem. The drive does the burning, not the program, which merely tells the drive what to write.

The firmware in a drive examines the disc when it is inserted, and if it recognizes the brand, it will likely have certain parameters it sets to do the burn. There's also a "test area" on the disc for the drive to actually do a test burn and read it back to make sure all is well.

Do you have reason to suspect otherwise?

Hope that helps!
