vhs to dvd, capture or convert by hardware, then edit

Tinman47346

Question

Ok, I'm so new to this I don't know what I don't know yet. I did look for this question but did not find it. I have on order Roxio Creator 2010 Pro. I also have a Magnavox VHS to DVD player that can dubb, that will do the job in a couple minutes after the run time of the video. What I want to know is should I try and capture from the video player and let the Creator software do the converting and then edit, or can I save processing time by using my dubber and then save the DVD to hard drive and then edit? And if I can save it to hard drive from DVD and then edit, are instructions for this found in Creator 2010 Pro? Please don't beat up this newbie for not having all the expert terminology, just looking to learn.

Dell Studio 17, 1747 laptop

8 GB Duel Channel DDR3 SDRAM @ 1333mhz

windows 7 64 bit OS

2X 500 GB SATA hard drives 7200RPM

1GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650

Intel Core i-7 -720 quad core processor 2.8GH 6mb cache

I hope I gave enough system information. I am looking forward to getting started and learning. I have done a lot of VHS to DVD transfers just using the dubbing and want to do more editing for scene transition, lighting and sound correction etc that Roxio seems to offer. Any assistance in the place to look for this info is greatly appreciated.

Also, I have Roxio Burn which came with my system. Anything I should do before installing the Creator 2010 Pro? Thank You

 Well knowing that no one has used a converter. I will muddle through and let you know what I find. It does a really good gob of conversion, you just can't edit except for titles and start and stop points. Looking forward to the arrival of my Creator Pro software. Thank you!

Your Magnavox device may do a better job than Roxio :o It is purpose built to do one thing, so it may handle some things a little better…

Do some short caps at first if you can limit it. It will probably work better for you, if you copy the VIDEO_TS folder from your disc to your HDD and Add Movie from there.

In Roxio, VideoWave (Edit Movie-Advanced) is the Editor and MyDVD (Create DVDs) is the disc Authoring tool.

Stumped? Questions? Advice? – this is the place! :D

Welcome!

Question one (capture): Get a couple of DVD RW's and test it both ways and tell us??? Which one puts the best quality on the final disc?

As far as Roxio Burn – don't know what that is BUT if it were mine and it were OEM… Dump the Junk!!!

Never had any OEM program that was of any real use to me or survived the first year… ;)

Sorry for the misnomer, my printout just says Roxio Easy 10, someone else called it Burn but it just is the OEM CD-DVD burner packaged from Dell. I take from your answer that I can save a DVD to file then edit, however the answer also says "try it both ways". I was hopping to get an expert opinion so I didn't waste my time, I believe in getting getting information from the people who have been there done that. Still open to suggestion. Thanks

That changes nothing at all… it is still a cut down OEM version! used to be 10.2 nowadays, it is a 10.3 with Win7 compatibility and still equally useless.

With Creator 2010 you have a full version of the Suite and it is new and current software! EMC 10, other than a recent dusting, is software than has been out of production for 2 years…

None of the regulars here have the conversion device you mentioned, hence you are the one that gets to plow new ground and tell us what you find :o

I don't know if it is the same Roxio Burn that is in Creator 2010 but that is a way of moving files from your computer to a disc. it is session writing as opposed to packet writing whihc has been good and terrible for some people.

If you open Roxio burn, do you see a disc on the lower right of your desktop? That is Roxio Burn. Since it is included in Creator 2010, it will be reinstalled. Some people don't use it so they don't configure it.
