windows7 shutdown when I click burn

ItalBrew

Question

I just got a new PC with a Plextor CD/DVD burner. It came with Roxio Creator 10 CE. I'm trying to burn an ISO image. When I click burn Windows 7 promptly shuts down with no error message or anything! It looks like a normal shutdown as if I clicked Shutdown in the Start menu. I can read files using the drive just fine, I've installed lots of sofware with it, but I can't seem to burn with out Windows 7 just shutting down. It's weird I've never seen software just shutdown the PC.

Please help.

Actually, it just happened again while I was just browsing through the Roxio Creator 10 CE menus. Windows 7 just shutdown!

OK, burning discs works just fine with the built-in Window7 disc burning utility, but every attempt to use Roxio Creator 10 causes windows to shutdown and reboot. It's weird, it looks just like a normal reboot as if I selected it from the Start menu.

Should I just uninstall Roxio and forget about it? What can it do for me that the windows utility can't? I guess maybe it could do the LightScribe labeling? I can't tell since I can't get it to run without shutting down the PC :)

It's not an instant shutdown and then reboot? I wouldn't be surprised if you're getting a blue screen error but your machine is set to restart instead of showing the blue screen.

Roxio Creator 10 [even the full version] is NOT compatible with Windows 7, and if its drivers are getting into a tangle with Windows 7 then that could cause the behavior you describe. That's why I asked it came installed with your Win 7 or arrived with something else.

I would suggest you uninstall your Creator 10 CE since it conflicts with Windows 7. Since it's a CE version it will likely be severely limited, so I don't know what functions it has left. Windows 7 and its built-in tools like Media Player will do simple work for you, but you'll probably need extra software if you want to do more complex media work.

Was your new PC supplied with both Windows 7 and Creator 10 CE already installed together, or did the software come with the burner as an after-market install, please?

Windows 7 has a built-in burning system which can make several different types of disc. If you don't run your old Creator 10 CE, can you write discs with Windows 7 without the shutdown?

The software came with my Plextor CD/DVD burner.

I'll give the built in software a try.

Well, that sucks. It is true, Windows7 comes with media player, but it doesn't recognize the Ogg-Vorbis files that I want to burn to an audio CD. Time to buy Nero I guess, assuming it is compatible with Windows7.

Why go to Nero?

The latest Nero will run in Windows 7, but so will the latest Roxio offering, Creator 2010.
