Tom N.
I have a 6 year old Sony Vaio desktop with windows XP and have the 5.3.5.10 Easy CD Creator with "freeze, lock-up" problems when upgrading to new PIONEER 118L DVD writers. I have tried 2 different, new units with the same result, both start off writing the TOC for an audio CD but freezes at that point or shorttly after and then the CD will just run on and on even after trying to cancel the burn to where I have to shut the computer off manually to stop and eject the CD . I also notice a "flcikering" of the screen where the drive unit identity is below the "select source files" upper left part of the page. I used 2 PIONEER DVD writer drives that were 4 years old and never had any kind of issue like this, but both have died out on me now. I believe there is some kind of conflict with the drives and this version of the software. The new PIONEER will work fine for other applications but I would like to find out what is causing this. I know the software is good because I currently am using 2 new LITE ON DVD writers and they both work fine but my preference is PIONEER. Any ideas and feedback is appreciated
Brendon
Tom, Easy CDCreator 5 has some rudimentary ability to interrogate a drive and ask it what its capabilities are, but in the main it relies on matching your drive to an entry in a lookup table. Essentially, if your drive is newer than the software, it won't be in the lookup table. Remember that this software is around 6 or 7 years old. It seems that your Lite-Ons are responding well to questions from the software, but your Pioneers aren't. It may be time to update your software, or else start surgery on your registry to trick ECDC 5 into recognizing the Pioneers. Tom N.
What would I need to do to modify the registry as I would like to try and use these Pioneer units. The last 2 worked for over 4 years with Creator 5 and were very solid performers. Thanks for any suggestions, Tom N.
Brendon
Tom, can you give me the full drive ID of the drives, please? Open Device Manager, click on the '+' beside the entry for DVD/CD-Rom drives, and tell me exactly what's shown. It should be something like this, and spaces and capitals/lowercase are important. Once I have the Drive-IDs I'll research it, and should be back with an edit to try within a day. Brendon
Tom N.
PIONEER DVD-RW DVD-118L I am going to try Easy CD Creator 6 today and see if I get the same isssue. I know that the NERO 8 ESSENTIALS bundled software that came with it works fine with no freezes Thanks for your effort
Brendon
Hi Tom, I don't think we'll be able to do this edit with Easy CD and DVD Creator 6, because someone at Roxio started encrypting things in that version. I'll work on the ID you've given me and see what I can come up with. Can you check it again please, to see how many spaces there are between DVD-RW and DVD-118L. I think there should be two spaces there [it is important] but the Invision board software here truncates it down to one space. Too few spaces and you won't get a match in the lookup table. I'm about to go horizontal here, so it will probably be 10 or so hours until I get back to you - all going well. Regards, Brendon
Tom N.
Hey Brendon, I think I will stick with the Lite-on units. I put the PIONEER back in to get the ID and thought about loading Creator 6 but I am hesitant to do so because the Lite-on units work well for what I need. I will probably just return the PIONEER and forget trying to circumvent the Creator 5. The Lite on units are $10 cheaper apiece anyway. Thanks again for your time and effort. It is "HP DVD Writer 1140d" I am running Win XP SP3. All I need is the burner and Direct CF Format to run. Do you think that you can come up with a fix? Your help is greatly appreciated. Brendon
Sorry TomH, Firstly, the sort of registry edits I've been doing only work for Creator. They don't affect Direct CD. Secondly, the software only handles up to the DVD Writer 530r. The DVD Writer 1140d is too far distanced from that to be successful. Regrets, I can't help you. That's what I was afraid of. Do you know of any packet writing software that is currently available. I use Direct CD (even with all of it's faults) to be able to use CD-RW and DVD+RW discs as "large floppies" to backup and copy data from Windows Explorer. I haven't been able to find any other packet writing software that would format the CD or DVD so that it behaves like a regular disc. Do you have any ideas? Thanks again for the help. Use Flash drives or just get a external hard drive. Both are fairly cheap these days.Ex Hard drive for less than $50.
