it's just the aspect ratio problem!

J. Nam

Question

(this is converting problem, not toasting)

there's 640x480 (4:3) video file and I want it converted to 640x360 (16:9)

just wanna change the aspect ratio without any letterboxes!

toast 10 can do it???

I just can't get it...

why is the aspect ratio of converted video always same with that of original...?

no matter what sources and options...

toast 10 just automatically inserts the letterboxes and forces to preserve the aspect ratio...

why does the checkbox named "preserve aspect ratio using..." exist anyway, huh?

please tell me I'm a fool and teach me how to do it

unless the $79.99 product you made/purchased is just a peace of crap

OMG... it happens only to me then... the worst scenario this is...

The source video does not have black bars, and I think I got it done right...

Thanks for your help anyway!

My mistake. Toast is adding a window box (black bars on the sides) to maintain the aspect ratio. It shouldn't do this is if the box is to retain the aspect ratio is unchecked. I used your video clip with QuickTime 7 Pro and instructed it to rescale as 640x360 without retaining the aspect ratio and the video rescaled the way you want.

So far I can't find a way to get it to correctly work in Toast. I'll look into this some more to see if I can find a solution.

Okay, you're a fool. (I don't think you are but I'm just being agreeable). In the Convert window choose QuickTime Movie as the export setting. Choose custom. Click the Size button and enter 640x360 as the size. Do not click the box to retain the aspect ratio because you are, in fact, wanting to change the aspect ratio. If the selected codec (e.g. MPEG-4) is what you want click okay. Otherwise change the codec in the Settings window. Close the boxes and convert the video.

You know... I tried that already, and it doesn't work...

still same aspect ratio and #$^@ letterboxes...

I definitely did not check the box to retain the aspect ratio.

Have you actually converted a video with that option and checked if it works?

What should I say... so it's a bug after all.

I found this quite long before and have been looking for someone to confirm.

I really appreciate your help, tsantee. :)

I think I should report this to Roxio guys.

Yes. I did a test before I replied to your post. I added a 640x480 video, changed the size to 640x360. The resulting video is reported as 640x360 in QuickTime Player. There is no letterbox.

Does your source video already have black bars? Are you trying to crop out the existing letterbox? Toast doesn't do cropping. It only rescales the entire frame. If what you need is a cropping tool to eliminate the existing black bars then Google "video crop mac", visit videohelp.com for some Mac user tips, and/or search the software databases at macupdate.com and versiontracker.com.
