ggrussell
Just upgraded the hard drive in my laptop and decided to install my copy of Vista Home Premium on it. Laptop came with XP. So this is a frsh format and install. No audio although Vista 'thinks' everything is working fine. I"ve checked disabled sound items, etc. , and I know the speakers do work. The drivers are correct. Device Manager states the device is workigng correctly. Any ideas? TIA
Beerman
Just a shot in the dark but you can try uninstalling the sound device in device manager and rebooting and see what happens when it restarts. Make sure the 'delete the driver software for this device' box is checked so it will remove the driver and look for one when it restarts. Oh, and make sure the default device for sound is set for speakers.
ggrussell
I've done that several times. When I click to configure the Speakers and press the Test button, Vista thinks it is playing the sound. As far as the OS is concerned, nothing is wrong. I have noticed that Vista runs really slow on this machine even with 1.5GB memory. If I can't figure this out today, I'll just use the Gateway restore discs and go back to WinXP. If you come up with any other ideas, like me know. Thanks
Beerman
Gary, right click the speaker icon in the taskbar and choose Playback devices......what is the default set for? it should be speakers. I've played around with a system with onboard audio and changing the default to something else does make no sound. Defaulting back to speakers makes them work. I've got nothing else I can suggest after that.....sorry.
cdanteek
Where did you get all the MB, sound, and videocard drivers from, for the Vista x32 OS? cd
ggrussell
Where did you get all the MB, sound, and videocard drivers from, for the Vista x32 OS?Whatever Vista installed by default. Paul- there is only only playback device (Speakers with a green check mark). I even checked to see if there were any 'disabled' devices. Nothing
Beerman
Whatever Vista installed by default. Paul- there is only only playback device (Speakers with a green check mark). I even checked to see if there were any 'disabled' devices. Nothing I'm beginning to think along the lines of cd that the wrong driver is installed for that device. I would check the manufacturers site for Vista drivers (if they have one). Vista changed lots on the audio side but why it would install without marking that device as a problem is confusing to me. If the laptop manufacturer doesn't have it, then search for the audio device itself. More than likely it's a Realtek, C-Media or Intel. I've seen some generic drivers that work with SoundMax and IDT devices too. May not have all the bells and whistles but some will play standard sounds. REDWAGON
I've done that several times with my laptop Gary. Each time I change to a different OS (new clean install) I have to go and get all the drivers that came with the original XP OS for the laptop. I never have gotten all of the drivers for the newer OS to work completely. Since I have downlaoded all of the original drivers that were on the laptop when I bought it new. Now when I change to Vista Home Premium 32bit, I install all the original drivers and everything works great. (btw, my laptop is an HP and that's where I downlaoded all of the drivers for my particular model laptop). Frank...
ggrussell
Frank - are you saying the XP drivers will work with Vista? Paul - Gateway doesn't support Vista for this laptop. NOTHING at all! I'm restoring XP now. Not going to fool with Vista any longer. Was just a thought since I had a copy of Vista Home Premium laying about. Guess I could try selling it on eBay or Craig's list. LOL

I'm restoring XP now. Not going to fool with Vista any longer. Was just a thought since I had a copy of Vista Home Premium laying about. Guess I could try selling it on eBay or Craig's list. LOL I removed the original XP Home OS from my HP laptop and then installed a clean, retail version of Vista Home premium 32 bit. At first there were several items that didn't work. One was the Wi-Fi driver I had been using to get on the internet wirelessly. Also I couldn't get any sound (the MB has an on-board sound chip)and the mouse pad didn't work (did work with a regular USB mouse though). So I went to the HP website and under the model laptop I have I downloaded all of the drivers they have for the hardware that came with it originally. Installed the ones I needed and after that everything worked just like it did with the XP OS. Oh, btw Gary, I just bought a new Vista Home Premium Full Retail copy that comes with both 32 & 64 bit OS's that I am going to install on a computer I built for a friend a year or so ago. Don't know if the ver. of Vista you have is retail or OEM, but had I known, I would have ask about it--sorry. Frank...
ggrussell
I have retail Vista Home Premium Educational 32bit only. My laptop works fine with WinXP and Gateway does have a few updated drivers for XP. I just thought I would upgrade to Vista since I had it laying around. LOL Oh yeah, and the XP driver is Conxenant! not Intel like Vista detected. Depends on how I feel. Might reinstall Vista and look for Conxenant audio drivers. Have been outside digging in the dirt. We had a record breaking 86 degrees today!

I really didn't know if the old XP drivers I downloaded would work with Vista either but they did. Stay cool amigo ! Frank...
ggrussell
I really didn't know if the old XP drivers I downloaded would work with Vista either but they did.Very interesting indeed.... I think what I'll do is create a clean, updated WinXP install and then create an Image Backup. Then I might try do the Vista 'upgrade' instead of a clean Vista install. Maybe Vista will recognize the correct drivers that way. Wish Win7 didn't cost so much. I bet Win7 would run much better on the laptop.

It is a resource hog (i.e., add add'l 1.5GB RAM!), does not support your chipset and several peripherals (several printers come to mind), and keep annoying you with "are you sure" dialog boxes! if you want to upgrade, go to Windows 7; that one addresses shortcoming of Vista! ggrussell
Just for kicks I installed Win7 on this laptop in trial mode. Oddly enough, there is an audio driver, but no graphics driver. LOL The standard VGA driver (no AERO) works fine though even at 1280x800. What's confusing is although there is an audio driver, there is no sound. I did turn off the digital audio output. The speakers work fine in XP so I know they work. Has to be some setting. Was interesting to see it Win7 would work, but XP definitely runs better on this laptop. Guess I should just be happy with that. LOL

Usually, the WindowsUpdate would take care of that; and/or the Windows 7 drivers from the manufacturer. Though, as to the latter, the life-cycle is becoming shorter and shorter so that the product may have already reached end-of-life when it rolls out to the market... ;-)
sknis
Did you ever check out the Volume Mixer to see if the inputs are not muted. This seems to be sort of an independent control. Right click on the speaker icon on the bottom right and select open volume mixer. This is from Vista 64. I had to check that frequently when I was recording and during playback. Not surprising since it is a 5 yr old laptop. Thanks Steve, but I also checked the mixer, too. I just restored XP. If I want to use Win7, I'll just have to think about buying a new laptop. It was difficult enough finding a PATA laptop drive!
cdanteek
Windows update or installing a newer operating system provide the correct chipset and motherboard drivers, I don't think so. If the manufacture don't have them, it probably isn't going to work... cd
gi7omy
I'd agree with CD there - when I installed W7 on this box I couldn't get a proper shutdown (it did a reboot instead). The MS drivers for the nForce chipset were the culprit - an update from nVidia solved it so the moral is, don't trust the MS default drivers
