Final Cut Express and Toast 10 Titanium

Russell Davis

Question

Hi, can someone PLEASE help?? I have a new large screen iMac which I bought specifically for editing my Hi Def home movies. I am using a Panasonic HD camera which records in the AVCHD format. I am able to import the AVCHD video clips into Final Cut Express and edit the video .... so far so good! The question is how do I export the finished video project from Final Cut to Roxio 10? .... then how do I save and burn onto standard 4.7g DVD for storage and back up without losing the Hi Def content ..... any help really appreciated. Thx Russ (UK)

Toast's disc spanning when using Mac Only or Mac & PC in the Data window will automatically split your video across multiple discs for archiving. As for the best export setting from FCE, I suggest checking the Final Cut Express forum at discussions.apple.com.

Hi CJ3 " I hope this works for you as well. My next step is to tweak the setting in TOAST 10 to see if I can improve the video quality a bit more.[/qu[/i]ote] "

You are Right, I make the same System HD-DVD (only 25 min.) like You,

with SUPER DRIVE in my MacPro .

But really I want too to ask, how can I take the video quality a little bit more ?

And more video material (quantity) for one Medium?

For Example : Can I take (ext. or int.) Blu-ray Burner for burn to Blu-ray Disk ?

Or can someone other help about it ?

Please !

Thanks !

I finally just got my workflow down this weekend using FCE and Toast 10 Titanium PRO (finally broke down and moved from Toast 9 to Toast 10).

1. "Import" video file (AVCHD) via the log and transfer process.

2. Do the regular edits, chapter markers, titling with Live Type, etc.

3. When done editing, Do File>Export>Quicktime Movie. Uncheck the option "Make Movie Self-Contained". This will force Toast to be the one to do the encoding.

4. Open TOAST 10. Choose Burn a blue ray disc from a video file.

5. Drag your quicktime file in. You have the option to have a menu. By the way, if you exported your markers in FCE, Toast 10 will use them -- NICE!. So far I've used the default settings in TOAST 10 and have been VERY pleased with the video quality. It's very close to the original quality coming out of the Canon HFS10, though a bit softer.

6. Choose the media you want to burn to. In my case, I burn to DVD.

7. Then, you can click the big red button to burn. In my case, I choose save as an image file. This creates a *.TOAST file. Then I burn my DVD from this. I know this is an extra step but in doing so, I create a backup of my edited project that can be burned on a DVD at any time.

8. Toast will begin the encoding process. This may take a while. What I like about Toast 10 is it actually uses all 8 cores on my MacPro.

It took a lot of research and a long time for me to figure out this "combination" of software solution to come up with this workflow that worked for me and satisfied me as far as video quality. I hope this works for you as well. My next step is to tweak the setting in TOAST 10 to see if I can improve the video quality a bit more.

Well, I finally finished editing my 2009 videos and to my surprise, I was able to fit in more than 1 hour and 10 minutes worth of HD videos onto a DL DVD+R. Using the same source file (from step three I described before), I produced a DVD (Std Def) with a single layer DVD-R and Blue ray Disc (High Def) with a double layer DVD+R just to compare the video quality of the final product.

The quality of the BR Disc using a DL DVD+R is definitely a lot better, cleaner, and undeniably HD. I guess I expected the quality to deteriorate significantly with the amount of video I'm cramming in one disc... even if it is double layer.

Did it work? Reason I ask is is that the capturing and importing my Panasonic avchd-stuff in Final Cut Ex. and/or iMovie seems to work fine, but then the burning of dvd's causes major problems with Toast 9 and iDVD. Your question might also refer to those isssues, and not only to the capturing.
